gtx 770 -> 1080p or 1440p

ForFour

I want to buy a new monitor for mostly gaming and I pretty much fell in love with the asus rog swift but I am not sure whether to go with 1440p or whether i should stick with 1080p for now.

My specs:

CPU: i7-4770k (atm at stock am going to try to get to around 4.5 GHz)

GPU: single gtx 770 Zotac amp! edition

RAM: 16 GB corsair vengeance

My main games would be League of Legends and DotA 2 but I also play a lot of other different kinds of games (my steam library for those interested, MMORPG,  and some Battlefield 4)

With that in mind would you get a 1440p monitor and play at lower settings (which i don't mind since i think that in most games there is barely any differences between high and medium or even low) or would it be better to get a 1080p monitor (like BenQ xl2420g/xl2411g once it comes out) and play at ultra settings with highest MSAA and all that stuff.

If you do get the 1440p monitor, don't expect to max out triple A titles. It'll be just fine for League and Dota though.

1080p

though I have run games in 1080p on my 1440p display and its doable for a few games

Depends how long you intend to keep your GPU and Monitor, as if you upgrade your GPU down the road 1440p will be fine

yes I watched that already and I am not expecting to max them out. I wanna know what would look better 1080p at higher settings or 1440p at lower settings

There is some saving running a game in medium at 1440p vs High 1080p, its hard to say, though I still think high/ultra on 1080p looks better

if you are planning the upgrade get the 1440p screen, as you can always run games on lower settings or at lower resolution for a few months until you can afford the upgrade

1080p. You will have to tune down your settings for 1440p.
You can "test" using 1440p in BF4 with res scaling at 133%. Then you can see what performance to expect. It also hammers VRAM like the 1440p res would because your GPU actually has to render at a 133% resolution and only the monitor has to display it at 1080p again......kinda makes sense?

Edited the percentages because I am too stupid to calculate correctly... ;-)

You can "test" using 1440p in BF4 with res scaling at 140%. Then you can see what performance to expect. It also hammers VRAM like the 1440p res would because your GPU actually has to render at a 140% resolution and only the monitor has to display it at 1080p again......kinda makes sense?

Thanks I will give it a try and see how it runs.

how mutch % would it have to be on 1680:1050 since that is the resolution i am running at the moment.

well just divide 2560/1680and you get the percentage! ;-)

2560/1680 is 1,528..... so around 153% would be accurate enough.

I used to run a 770 + 1440p but upgraded to 780 shortly after due to maxed memory crashing my framerate. If you keep the image processing off it's usually ok but can still drop from time to time.

IMO if your primary focus is games 1080p with a bit of AA is fine, if you do more with your computer then just gaming 1440p wins hands down and if you have moderately regular upgrade cycles I would also go with 1440p. With a GTX770 on 1440p expect to have to do some tweaking on the more demanding games to get your frame rates and memory usage at a satisfactory point but it will still handle a lot of games maxed out.

Perfect 1080p card, the 770 is not made for 1440p.

I don't play the latest games but I do use my computer a lot, I've only got a gtx 660 but I wouldn't go back to 1080p, the experience in windows is much better, and on the games I play my frame rates are fine.
