Hi.

I'm planning a somewhat quiet build. I'm going to get the Pentium first as I can't yet afford the 4790k.

Now, would you run a Strix R9 280 and a 4790k overclocked with the RM 550? There's a pretty big price leap to the 650 watt one and I would really like to get this particular power supply. Not going to use more than one graphics card.

Thanks.

It should work just fine.

But any reasons to go with a pentium/i7 and "just" an r9 280?

Not sure if you're buying from Finland, but I've seen some more powerful choices for the money the 280 strix is. Unless you found some awesome deal.

550W is perfect but please don't get the RM 550. Pointless to shell out that much money and get an overhyped CWT. Even for any RM there's nothing about it that makes it worth the cost. Get a 550W Rosewill Capstone or Seasonic G.

I have similar plans to you! 770 and then saving up for a 4790k :D I would go with an RM550 if you are going for a full corsair build (case and PSU), but apart from that, get an EVGA Supernova 650W or a CX600M and save the extra money.

550W XTR, Seasonic G or Capstone will do fine, 650W is really not that great of a placement for a power supply. Too much for single GPU, not enough for two.

550W is decent enough, however, I recommend you buy a power supply that isn't from CWT. Personally, I'd go for a XFX Pro XTR better known as their Black Edition series (product code P1-550B-BEFX) it costs less (where I live) and it's a tier 1 power supply made by Seasonic (based on the xtremesystems PSU list, the list the newegg list was based on).

Yeah I know that the RM is pretty bad for the money but I couldn't find any power supplies that -as dumb as it sounds- has flat and fully black cables. I would get the Rosewill Hive/Capstone if they were available.

Maybe I could get a Super Flower or a Seasonic one and then swap the cables?

It should work just fine.

But any reasons to go with a i7 and "just" an r9 280?

The reason is that my use of the PC is mainly editing. The 280 is more than enough for my gaming needs and it also comes with free games. And because it's just really good for the money.

If you get a regular 550-600 watt80+ and a cheaper 280, can you get a i5 4670?

Edit. Didnt see you were editing a lot. But i still think this might be better value

Not if the power supplies are from different manufacturers, that wouldn't work.

Just sleeve them or ask somebody to get the job done for you. :)

Seasonic G has flat black cables, so does XFX XTR because they're basically the same power supply (but get Seasonic if you don't want to deal with XFX's cancer-inducing customer service)

Capstone doesn't have flat black cables but it's technically a lower end PSU then the SSG/XTR

Yeah, I wasn't going to get the cables from another PSU, probably going to sleeve myself.

You mean this? The G-series doesn't have all-flat cables it seems like. The XTR also doesn't have a flat 24-pin, I could sleeve it though.

I'll probably get a one with ugly cables and then sleeve it fully.

The 24pin and 8pin CPU are the only ones that aren't flat. The rest are.

The XTR has only the 24 pin that's not flat, but in reality it's just one cable you don't really see or work with a lot.

Oh from Germany. Nice prices l but I dread dealing with warranties.

Yeah it can be a pain, fortunately Mindfactory has a good support.

If I bought the parts from Finland, it would be probably couple hundreds more. :F

The 24pin and 8pin CPU are the only ones that aren't flat. The rest are.

-boop-

They are also the only ones that are fixed. :(

At that point I'll probably go with with the XFX one or maybe the Leadex and then sleeve that.

XTR is fully modular

Sorry, I meant the G-series one. The 24-pin on the XTR I could replace.

Get the HIS IceQ Turbo in the top right hand corner of the pic hands down. It is one beast of a cooler even though it looks a bit ugly and is a blower. @EcoBoost has one.

I was looking at it but the silence of the Strix is just too tempting.

I also does look pretty bad. :D

The silence of the Strix is a marketing gimmick, if anything, it's actually bad for AMD cards.

With any graphics card the fan will be inaudible under low load, it doesn't matter if it's off or not as there's a fan curve for it anyways. Under load the Strix will be just as noisy as other non-reference cards anyways, the IceQ Turbo though is still very quiet under load, quieter then other 280s that I've tried, which shocked me for a blower but I guess it pays back for it's ugliness.

For AMD cards though even in low load when playing games that don't use the GPU much, the VRMs and VRAM still heat up, so having a card with an always-on fan will actually be better for the lifespan of the card then Strix.

Ah, I understand. I'll note this and look a bit more into them.

I might buy the Asus card just for the aesthetics, even though it's a bit more expensive.

And the reason I would really want a good looking power supply is this. Just look at that.

You can't see the 24 pin with the side panel on. lol

If you want aesthetics then go with something like Windforce, Club3D RoyalKing, Sapphire DualX, MSI Gaming... there's a lot of good nice looking cards

And the Strix is one of them. I could just change the fan curve couldn't I?
