Connecting a switch to the internet

Linux User

Sorry but I am a total fool when it comes to networking. I have a 4 port router to connect to the internet, of which 3 are already used. I may be getting my hands on a bunch of old computers which I want to fold with. My question is: Can I use the last port on my router to connect to (see below for link) an 8 port gigabit switch which I will connect to the computers to give internet access to them?

This is the switch I am considering: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TP-Link-TL-SG1008D-1000Mbps-Gigabit-8-Port-Ethernet-Switch-Australia-Warranty-/261280256993?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3cd58453e1

Yes. You can chain switches. Just keep in mind that the bandwidth of that one port is divided between the ports of the switch when they all try to get packages from the first port. When communicating via the switch only there should be no slowdowns.

You can but it's not the recommended configuration for security and other reasons.

He is asking about hooking up his switch to the local network. Not actually onto the internet so everything will be behind his nat'd router. So no real security problems there.

Edit: But on OP that is a decent switch. I am using it for the time being in my rack space at work until I can get my hands on a proper 3750g or 2960x.
