post-107988-0-71941500-1407919906_thumb.

1980 Yahama XJ650 Maxim

It is a shaft-drive.

It costed me $400.. and I need to replace the battery and starter relay.

It is also my first bike.

I take my basic-rider course on Thursday and Friday this week.. so it'll be interesting. (Then I get to go and register the bike at the court house.)

I'd like to restore it.. it doesn't seem like rocket-science since I've worked on cars before.

I called a powdercoating shop and to prep and powdercoat the frame it'll be about $200.

Havent decided to paint the engine or not.

Definitely needs a new exhaust...

Surface rust in bits and places.. but it isn't that bad.

Purchased a relay and waiting for it to come in.. and the battery on Thursday after I take my test.

I had a computer.. and then I let FedEx ship it.

Sounds like a fun project. Once you know where the battery is, it's an easy 5 min job. I recommend buying a lithium one. They last long in storage and are a lot lighter. Also, welcome to the Yamaha family :)

Soooo... besides some surface rust...

I've already pulled out the battery so I can take it to a batteries plus place while I am in town to see about getting another one.

post-107988-0-46674400-1407950146.jpeg

The relay switch is busted. Looks like the tiny button is stuck / was pushed in and just broke the whole thing. We started it when I bought the bike. I have no idea how he did it though with a broken switch.

post-107988-0-22424900-1407950153.jpeg

Pulled out the headlight, where the connectors hide.

post-107988-0-58657400-1407950150.jpeg

And some cosmetic issues.

The previous owner sat a milk gallon on the gas tank and drove home.

post-107988-0-80370500-1407950154.jpeg

Then he had custom seats made for the bike.. was taking saddlebags on or off, and nicked it with his knife. Two days after he had the seats made.

I got my lid yesterday. It's a RF-1200 Marquez Black Ant Replica. I rode 30 miles today to work in complete comfort. It vents similar to if you weren't wearing a helmet, came with a pinlock lens that works exceptionally well, is lightweight, and no buffeting to report when turning my head for lane changes. Don't buy cheap helmets guys because you get what you pay for. I'll be buying a chrome visor sometime this week- either a golden or silver. Not sure yet.

In other news, my clip ons should be here by Monday so that'll probably be a project next weekend. I'll have some pics to share with you all of the install.

How's the wind noise?

Slightly less than my BELL Vortex. The noises are less of a high pitch noise and it almost sounds like the cabin of a luxury car when you close up all of the vents. Supposedly there's a whistle if you leave the visor partially cracked and ride but I haven't experienced that yet nor do I do it very frequently.

I'm still on my helmet I got last year when I first started riding.

Can't afford a Shoe or an Arai yet but I will be getting a HJC IS-17 with a tinted visor.

Just need to sell my old moped so I have some money.

Rode my Gixxer for 7 years, was hit earlier this year. Bike was totaled, made a full recovery and I am no longer riding. Motorcycles are not dangerous it's the distracted drivers who do not see them who are dangerous!

Glad you're ok. I drive aggressively for that reason. I'm always visible and I don't shift up until I know my engine will be loud enough to hear over the other road noise. I'm constantly moving in my lane to stay visible and constantly checking my mirrors. Some may not like it, but I haven't been hit since I started riding 7 years ago.

Yep I had the same philosophy, ride like nobody see's you. Oncoming car turned left into me, got a split second of braking in, driver said they did not see me.

OK!

I need help.

I have had problems finding grips for the xj650.

Original grips with a 121mm tube depth (4-3/4"):

and 7/8 handle bars.

I find it where the left side is 22mm (7/8 inch) and the right side is 25mm..

Am I not supposed to have both 22mm (7/8)?

( Again xj650 )

I had a computer.. and then I let FedEx ship it.

Speaking of grips, I removed my handlebar assembly last night and loosened up all of my hand controls. The old grips were a pain to remove. I used a bent hanger and WD40 as recommended on youtube. I highly recommend using a hanger to wedge under there as it will loosen up the glue on your stock grips from the factory. I have a pair if grips to pick up from Iron Pony later this evening and my clip ons will be at home on my porch waiting for me. I'll post pics when I get done :D

All I have to do now is slide everything from my old bars onto the new bars. I'll be buying a RAM mount with the U-Bolt here pretty soon since my old phone mount is now incompatible.

Well I have the clip ons installed and my new grips. However, I made the huge mistake of lowering my triple tree to much and my bike is insanely low. Gonna have to call up the shop today so they can adjust it for me. I don't want to make any more mistakes. Hopefully they can pick it up (not currently ride able) and work on it today. It's a quick fix with the right tools and someone that knows what they're doing.

Gotta be very careful with those types of changes. Almost more importantly than the front end ride height is the change to the rake angle that lowering the triple made. You have dramatically reduced the rake angle with this. The lower the rake angle the more responsive to turn in the bike will be, but the more unstable it will be at speed.

Its a pretty easy fix to get it back up again, just support the frame and loosen the triple to slide the fork tubes down. Lowering it a little is ok, but the 5-6" you have there will be a problem. With the clip-ons you will have to lower the front end the height of the clip on mount (about 1.5-2")

Yup double checked already. People on the FZ forums are reporting better handling in corners with it lowered the height of the risers and no "head shake" which probably refers to that instability you're talking about. Believe me... I don't intend on keeping it low like this. It just looks unsafe. In fact it's so low right now I don't think I could fit a triple tree stand underneath even if I had one :(

If I could raise the triple tree back up I would

I don't have a triple stand either and I have had the front end off of my bikes many times. A really popular practice is to strap the frame up from the rafters of your garage with a tow strap. Just be careful that the strap doesn't touch your tank as you would hate to scratch such a pretty bike. I have used this method probably a dozen times for everything from tire changes, to fork seals, to front end swaps. It is really pretty easy once you get an eye-bolt into the rafters.

Don't panic, you haven't done any damage, you just gotta get it squared back up. Easy fix :)
