So I was looking to buy a HOTAS after the racing module came out because while for dog fighting the KB+M is good because targeting is far more important them manoeuvrability when racing I felt like I needed finer control and the Xbox controller was just not quite up to it (still heads and shoulders above trying to deal with a KB+M). I was looking at the x55 but decided I'd see how things would go with just a joystick to start with as I'm sure when the SC HOTAS comes out (probably still at least a year away) I'll be down to buy that and dropping a large amount of cash on a x55 only to have it devalue before selling it seemed a bit wasteful. I ended up getting the Logitech extreme 3D pro as it was cheap but still had a lot of functionality, jumped into a race and sure enough it was the right choice for that but next I went back to dog fighting trying out swarm to test it and by gawd it was awful, not having any gimbaling made it damn hard to line up shots, though dodging asteroids was far easier. After dyeing at wave 5 -_- I thought screw this the joystick will be racing only so I grabbed my mouse for another round to make myself feel better ;) lo and behold my mouse no longer controlled the ship but gave me a full gimbal on my weapons! so I thought OK lets give this a go, initially with my mouse in my left hand and stick in my right things were going well if not a little awkwardly, I then swapped hands and found things worked out very well, I had full gimbaling and accuracy of my mouse for targeting while having full control over my ship with my joystick :) Managed wave 15 which is about average for me but in respawn 2 my ball turret got damaged early on so I could only aim up and down and in respawn 3 my lower manoeuvring thrusters got knocked out nearly right out of the gate so I could only pitch up at 11mph (or whatever the speed unit is) so I thought it went really well all things considered.

I was wondering if anyone else was running this setup? and if anyone knows of a decent left handed joystick? the Logitech works alright like this but the moulding gets a bit uncomfortable in my hand after a while because of the thumb rest is now sticking out into my palm.

Well first off, The SC HOTAS might be a Reskined X55, i base this on what i´ve seen so far at CIG. ofc its not Confirmed

I went ahead and bought the X55 because i like the Throttle over the ´hogs but the Hog´s Joystick Seems better, but so far i like My X55, and it actually works.

This setup of yours looks interesting, im fine with joystick control in dogfight and racing so might not bother but its a good idea :D

The x55 definitely looks like a nice bit of kit with a decent price tag, as nice as a warthog would be there's no way I could justify that sort of expense for essentially just SC (though as an engineer the build quality does make it tempting). I'm hoping they'll put the time in to make something a bit custom (if not I probably will lol), it probably wont be too out there because each ships controls will be different but some dedicated power and shield controls would be nice, though I wouldn't be surprised to just see a re-skinned x55. Eventually I'd still like to get a proper HOTAS but probably complement it with something like a TrackIR/Rift for gimbaling.

I tried the stick + mouse setup before and it's quite interesting. The only problem is the lack of the third hand to operate the ship's systems on the keyboard.

Yea my left hand was definitely flapping all over the place, looked like something out of a sci-fi movie when they first get attacked and everyone's flipping switches and pressing buttons xD with a bit of rebinding I think most of the core functionality could be mapped onto my mouse (G700s) and stick but again getting a left handed/ambidextrous stick would make getting at all the buttons a bit easier.

Eh the "quality" of the Warthog is in the Joystick, not the Throttle, plenty of reviews complain about it. I highly suggest checking out some review on youtube especially if it includes other HOTAS as well.

Another reason the Hog is so expensive is because its a "replica" of the real deal. so that's another extra $$$.

If i could id take the Hog´s Joystick with the X55´s throttle!! but honestly the X55´s Joystick sits VERY well in the hand, only button i have a little bit of a reach issue with is the Red button at the top. one of the "mini joysticks" is sort of in the way, but its not an issue because i don't have anything important connected to it.

I might Mod that joystick and add a different one, the stock one is like a Bowl so is annoying, maybe an Xbox/PS joystick.

Well whatever you end up getting, do tell!

and yeah if CIG made something NEW and not reskined i´d be overjoyed. hopefully they will make 2-4 different tiers of Setups.

1 Cheap option with a simple joystick or something,

1 HOTAS like the X55

1 full set of Flight controls with Pedals and whatever!

and maybe 1 that has the Full Flight control + something like IR or VR 500-800$ option. ALL INCLUSIVE!

ATM by far the best control scheme is Joystick +Mouse - Now will that stay like it is ? who knows.

Joystick / Throttle and IR head tracking is a good alternative but still not as accurate as controlling gimbal with mouse.

Ps3 controller for me still, right stick for gimball, can't wait till they fix the deadzones, voice attack for commands I can't issue on the pad. Things like the interface have been improved that I've got the combinations to adjust shields memorized and can adjust them quicker than voice commands.

I do intend to go to stick and mouse though.
