cooling on smartphones?

hi guys! i just opened a octacore topic and since i saw a lot of answers another question came to my mind... i've noticed that a lot of phones tend to heat up while playing or just messing around on 3g internet, do you think we will ever be able to build a kind of cooling system for the new gen phones? i don't know, like copper heatsinks spreading on the backplate from the processor or vapor chambers or whatever?

Aluminum phones have their processor touching the aluminum backplate so that the phone casing acts as a heatsink, which is why they heat up in your hand.

No... Those things will break the form of the phone... Even if they did implement something like that internally, it would be really inefficient due to the lack of space to place fins in...

potentially in the future but right now its not economically feasible also modern phones dont really get all that hot maybe 45 degrees after long sessions?

I like stock android the best, when using other manufacturers skin, I can't get over how ugly their icons and gui look.

i wasn't thinking of fins... the thing i had in mind is kinda like an aluminum backplate completely spread with vapor chambers from behind so that the whole phone gets warmer than just a spot getting hotter and hotter...

or a vapor chamber that starts from the processor, and does acts like a metal frame while cooling down the phone

Sounds interesting... But... you're going to have to sacrifice a user-replaceable battery.... To add to that, having just a vapor chamber and no fins might seem a little pointless since it just acts much like an aluminum (or aluminium) backplate... Rather than the processor getting warm, the battery is the thing that gets the warmest with heavy usage (from personal experience)... Thermoelectrics might work, but you'll have a hot spot at the user's hands which might end up being very uncomfortable for the user...

 

The best solution for the heating problem right now is better battery technology...

Didn't the sony xperia Z2 have a heatpipe in it? I don't think it helped too much, but it spread the heat about a little bit more than without it, and thus stopped it throttling.

Yes, the Z2 had a heatpipe to try and get the heat away from the CPU, but it didn't help loads compared to other phones

I still see problems in the future. Take a look at laptops, they are powerful and in a small form factor and they overheat. Now with phones getting more powerful they start to get hotter and phones are still getting smaller (width wise).

how about water cooling? seriously, think about this: your phone has two holes (in and out) with a pipe in it and a water block on the cpu.

the pump and the radiator will be modular so that you don't need to bring them anywhere  but whan the user needs better performancethere you have it! you can overclock your smartphones cpu without a volcano effect !!

abviously it will only be a bulcky phone for the only ones that want those kinds of performance!!

Well, we're able to make pretty much all components smaller, but fans or pumps inside a smartphone still seems odd to me. Older computers were capable of spreading the heat with a heat sink and that's probably what smartphones will be forced to do in a couple of years. I am kinda worried about how this will be done in the future, but it's hard to imagine that nobody will try seeing how much competition there is on the smartphone market.
