Which headphones should I get?

I might do that one day, so I'll check out one of those stores in the city. Anything I should do while testing the headphones, like do I put together a playlist of a bunch of different genres?

Yeah, try to get things like Jazz / Acoustic / Classical music, they have lots of ranges of volumes / frequencies, really good for testing headphones.

bring some of your favorite songs as well.

Figure out where you're going to go ahead of time and call and ask or email them if they have demo samples if possible.

(that way you don't drive 2 hours to find out you wasted your time)

If you're up for a trip to NYC, you can go to Stereo Exchange (it's near the intersection of Broadway and Houston St in Manhattan).  They have so many things for you to try. I was there the other day and got to try Beyerdynamic DT 880, Custom One Pro, Audeze LCD-X and -XC, Grado SR80i, 225i, 325i, and PSB M4U.  Those are the ones I remember at least.

As a bonus, there's also a store 8 blocks up called AC Gears, which has a lot of headphones on display that Stereo Exchange does not.  Sennheiser HD 600, Shure SRH 840, and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x being the highlights I remember from my day.

Definitely bring some songs with you that you know well and have a variety of sounds.  It'll give you a baseline to compare everything to.

Titan: Intel Core i7-5820K | ASUS X99-A | Crucial Ballistix Sport 4x4GB DDR4-2400 | ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 970 | OCZ Arc 100 2x256GB in RAID 0 | Seagate Barracuda 2x2TB in RAID 1

EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 | Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium Window | Phanteks PH-TC14PE | ASUS BW-12B1ST
