Ordered the reference card due to an insane discount that I got. Is this card good for 1080p gaming? Do u think it is overkill?

Also, how long will it last me at 1080p?

It will last you a very very long time on 1080p. It gets about 110-120fps on ultra 1080 BF4.

It should last you a good while on 1080p. I saw a Crysis 3 Very High 4x Anti Aliasing benchmark where it got. 51 fps.

You will love it. It will even give you the chance to go up to a 2560x1440 monitor, or a higher refresh rate 1080 monitor if you want down the road

Dynamic Super Resolution means it isn't really overkill for 1080p. You can run games at higher resolutions and then sample back to a 1080p output.

I highly doubt that.

Well my 660ti still manages everything at very high 60 fps. That was a mid-high tier card when it came out, so yeah he'll be playing everything at ultra for 3 yeahs I'm confident in that.

If that's your standard, I think it will last long enough that you'll be getting jealous of the newest, latest stuff and want to replace your damned 980 with something sexier long before it needs to be.

I wouldn't say it's overkill, but I'd definitely look into a high refresh 1080p monitor so you can leverage that extra power without having to worry about dropping below 60fps. Just got my 980 and almost everything runs super smooth maxed out, I plan on buying an ASUS VG248QE monitor @ 144Hz- it can show up to 144 fps.

If you're on a tight budget you may want a 970 or R9 290, but the 980 is a beast of a card. My reference-cooled SC model works perfectly.

There's lots of games that will make the 980 work hard ... A few that come to mind of the top of my head TW2 with Uber sampling, MLL, TW3, GTA V, Far Cry 3 and others.
