PCI lanes question.

Go to solution Solved by Faa,

Wait, I thought we were talking about PCIe? It's a common mistake to write PCI instead of PCIe.

Apparently. My bad. He should have his wifi on the first slot of his board and the soundcard on the last slot so he can have the GPU at x16.

Hi

I have the 2600k i7 processor with the pz68 pro gen 3 motherboard. I just ordered the gtx 980 and after watching line's latest video, I became more confused.

I currently have installed the following on my motherboard:

WiFi adaptor PCI X1

ASUS XONAR PCI X8

So, will my gtx 980 work? And if so at what bandwidth?

Ps. Can someone be very knowledgeable on the subject reply please :), no guesses or assumptions!

Thanks

You should be able to run the Xonar in x1 or x4 unless you have some weird older Xonar release that I'm unaware of that has to run in x8...

To answer the question, lower the Xonar into a x1 or x4, run the GTX 980 in x8, and all will be fine.

Correction, the Asus XONAR sound card is installed on the 16x PCI lane not the 8x

Just because it is installed on x16/x8/x-anything does not mean it's actually running at that number of lanes...could you give us the actual model # of the Xonar?

It's the most recent XONAR stx 2. So I should put the wifi adaptor and XONAR in two separate PCI x1 slots and then put the gtx 980 into the 16x slot.. That way the gtx 980 will run at 8x?

To be brutally honest, you could sell the xonar and have no issues at all. And with the money from the xonar, you could get a dac. For audio that actually sounds better than the motherboard sound. But you won't notice an issue,

Then I'll have to deal with wires and an extra box to have around..I prefer the XONAR.

All you essentially did was replace your motherboards audio with a sound card that takes up lanes and gives you the exact same audio.

Why exactly are you using the Xonar?

Anyway, your CPU has 16 lanes and the chipset has 8. What you can do is place the Xonar and the WiFi card into x1 slots and the 980 into the x16 slot. It gives you only x8, but you can't see the difference.

^That one?^

It's just a standard PCIe x1 card. You can plug it into ANY PCIe lane on your motherboard. If you plug it into an x1 slot it will run at x1, if you plug it into a x16 full lane, it's still going to be running at x1, not x16. You can verify this by looking in your BIOS at the corresponding PCIe slot and it will state how many lanes it is currently using.

You should be able to run the GTX 980 at  x8.

16x on the GPU. You can't use the CPU lanes for PCI devices, they run of the chipset. You can't install a PCI card in a PCI-express slot. Both probs take 1x lanes so yeah will work fine having a GPU in the 16x slot and the xonar/wifi in the two PCI slots.
