single GTX 9x0 enough for 21:9 3440x1440

What you've forget to mention is that 1440P is almost twice the pixel count of 1080P ALREADY:

1920 x 1080 = 2 073 600 pixels

2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels

3440x1440 =  4,953,600 pixels

this is not standard 1440P resolution but ultra wide screen 21:9 i suppose.

Yes "21:9 3440x1440" is not run of the mill 1440P. More Pixels by quite a bit over standard 1440P.

at this point it's getting very demanding for current gen GPU's...

I run most games on ultra with 2 GTX 970 on my 3440x1440 monitor with around 50-60 FPS some dip down lower but in general 2 GTX 970 is kind of a sweet spot here

well i was hoping for a single card setup but good to know there is at least some kind of setup that can run a monitor like that

Nice necro you two... A 980ti should run around similar to two 970s depending on game (as does the titan x). Obviously if sli scales very well in game then 970 sli might be a bit better but many times it's not.
