is it possible to use old laptop processors with it's respective socket on a desktop motherboard? If so is this one of those processors that is usable.

(Reason for doing this: This is an old laptop that doesn't have good cooling/enough ram etc, etc. It's just old and i want to salvage it for a second file server, that's all, just to hold information.)

No pictures unfortunately.

Keep in mind, i HAVE a gaming PC already, this laptop was just collecting dust. I wanted to try to put it to use.

If it matches the socket on the mobo it could be cool but i dont think you can just take a laptop CPU off of the motherboard without alittle bit of effort

Yes Yes Legalize Gay Marriage sure, but have you ever considered Weaponizing Gay?

arent they soldered on? but a fun project would be to install the laptop mobo in a desktop case

Every laptop I have owned has not had the CPU soldered in, it was just held in the socket with a locking screw.

Neeed more info than 'old laptop' 'pentium processor'

anyway most likely no unless you find a mPGA desktop board, however fun fact- socket 478 laptop CPUs actually fit (but don't work) in a socket 478 desktop board!

common misconception that laptop cpus are soldered. more often than not no.

the soldered ones are the ulv stuff like the i5 4200u and atoms

Well I guess you haven't owned a laptop in the last 7 years then.

You'd be surprised.

I had a Dell XPS 17 L702x with an i7 2630QM and I'm pretty sure that was socketed.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

I remember reading an article on using a mobile pentium on a desktop mobo With some adapter. But that was made ages ago when I was seven and chances are those adapters don't exist and that your Pentium in not the same one.

The article was in Finnish though http://muropaketti.com/artikkelit/prosessorit/pentium-m-tyopoydalle

Thank you all for your kind responses, i've tried asking other websites/forums and they were all mean.

As to lack of photos, i couldn't get the photos off of my phone(I know DSLR is better my bro's using it tho)

it's a Socket 478 Pentium, the laptop was a Dell Inspiron 1720

I'm scrapping the monitor to use as an Aux. monitor.

The processor is not soldered on, in fact it's removable, if i have pictures copied to my PC i'd show you guys but sadly as mentioned i can't.

I did some research prior to asking so that's how i know it;s a Socket 478 processor, my hope is that it works in desktop motherboards since i want to be able to use it as a file server as before mentioned.

Did some more research, found the adapter that @RatedBlam mentioned.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-CT-479-CPU-Upgrade-Kit-Socket-479-CPU-to-Socket-478-Free-Shipping-/300798494993?

Seems like some people actually do what i had in mind,

So i looked out for motherboards to get then, and i'm still looking for those, any suggestions would be dandy.

Just sell it and get a new mobo.

1150 h81 and g1820 celeron combo shouldn't be that expensive and will be miles better than some old pentium.
