GTX 780 VS GTX 970

Point_And_Clicker

So, I've been debating on whether I should utilize a GTX 970 in my upcoming budget PC build of around $1000

But I'm not sure if I should replace my MSI GeForce GTX 780 TWIN FROZR 3GB GPU with the GTX 970.

I'd certainly be saving some cash and I would be keeping a good bit of the performance with the GTX 970 as it is priced around $100 cheaper.

What do you guys think? Would a 970 beat the 780 I was planning on purchasing?

I would keep the 780 for budget reason. The performance improvement isn't so much they you would be able to notice. I have a 670 tf 2gb and I can run game at high with a decent about of fps around 60 or better. So my suggestion is to save money.

Save money? The 970 is cheaper than the 780. I would go for the 970 personally, with a good over clock you beat the 780 and have more vram.

Am I right with thinking that you didn't build it yet?

If you didn't purchase the parts yet, then get the 970. I would always get the newer stuff if possible.

I once had one of these, now I've got this.

Certain 970 models on Newegg are priced at around $300-$350, whereas a GTX 780 would be priced around $450+ Wouldn't the 970 be a budget choice?

Unless of course you'd be getting more out of the 780 for what I'd be paying for rather than the 970.

You think I could OC a ZOTAC GTX 970 on it's stock cooler? (I'm okay with hairdryer noise)

He already owns the 780. Please read the full post.

The parts listed are parts that I'm planning to purchase, not already own.

Although, your contribution is more than appreciated.

The 970 compete well with the 780 and pricing usually goes out the window with new products as a newer product can sometimes cost less to make than an old product. I would suggest taking a look at the video Linus did on the 980. If you wait a little longer, Linus is about to release a video on the 970 and will include performance evaluation.

My bad, I read that as you already own the 780 and are upgrading to a newer rig. Sorry about that.

Will do, It's going to be a while before I accumulate the money to buy this build anyhow.

I just like to plan ahead.

With time, prices will also drop a bit so in that cause I would plan to get a 900 series card.

The 970 is cheaper, offers better performance, and draws less power. The 780 is also being discontinued, meaning you would have to buy a used one down the road if you wanted to SLI.

In other words there is no reason for anyone to buy a 780 anymore, unless they already have one and are going to SLI it.

Most likely. Unless you getting weird temps a the stock speed, i would see how far you can push it, especially if noise is not an issue.

GTX970 is faster, cooler, cheaper, full DX12 feature set, and has MFAA support.

There is no reason to buy a 780.

I found the 780 for 330$ U.S

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121779&cm_re=GeForce_780-_-14-121-779-_-Product

Assuming you can get the 970 for the MSRP price of 330$. It is interesting.

You won't get DX12 with 780, nor any of the new GPU feature or the added power efficiency, but you should get a bit more performance in games, if I am not mistaken.

I guess it comes down to performance vs features.

Btw you should do 4690k and a z97 mobo instead of z87 and 4670k as the other can over-clock further and is pre overclocked
