Im planning a build and was going to go with a r9 280x and an i5-4690k with no hdd and win 7 i stole from my old desktop. I dont have much money and saving money would be good, would it be much of a oerformance drop to go down to a 285 with the same cpu or a i5-4590 ? And then ill have money for a new hhd instead of salvaging one from a old pc ??

It wouldn't be incredibly significant, just go on ahead and do that.

Difference won't be that noticable and as you mentioned, this does save you quite a few dollars so I'd say that's a good decision.

Yup, small margin in performance difference. With XDMA Crossfire in 285, it will scale better compare to 2x 280x if you decide to get another one.

I'd go 285 w/ 4570 (if not OCing Devils Canyon just adds cost over normal haswell) maybe even 280x or 770 but I don't think those will be worth the extra cost for you

Edit: also consider getting a cheaper h87 board(with 4570)  that'll save some money too h simply means made for non 'K' cpus and 87 vs 97 isn't too different it's mostly just Devil's Canyon support(out of the box) and Broadwell support and a couple of other high end features your not likely to use or neglible tiny changes

The thing is would the 285 be good for ultra 1080p like the 280x ? Around 60fps

Yes it will run most games at 60 fps. I think it does BF4 at 68? Or maybe 66 but either way gr8 card.If you could afford more id say get a 290 cuz there really cheap right now but the 285 is a daaaamn fine card. :)

The 4590 is the updated equivalent of the 4570. Might as well go with the latest gen and go Haswell refresh (4590) and H97 instead of H87. Not really any cost difference. You get a tiny bit more performance and better longevity/more upgrade options later on.

That actually might be worth it. You're not going to need to oc really. Unless you go crossfire. You can still get a z97 tho and get a K processor later.

i just checked for a decent r9 290 its 430$ (power color) and without a cpu cooler and it having the 4590 and a h97 its 1000$ so around 70-100$ over budget :( but if i got the 285 with the 4690k would it be worth it over the 4590 ? Would i get much fps out of oc'ing the cpu ?

No fps gain. You will only get a gain if you ever stop a bottlenceck. Witch would happen if you did 2 290's. So you should just get the 290 IMO you wont regret it. Besides, the new cards are gonna be released and maybe more price drops!
