Hey folks! just wondering if I should purchase an R9 290x with aftermarket cooling or save extra for a 780ti. I've been seriously considering an R9 290x because of the price point and amd's never settle program, however I have been reading up alot on these cards and the consensus seems to be failures. Looking on Newegg, NCIX and Tom's Hardware for product reviews a LOT of people are reporting blackscreen, failures, overheating, rma's, artifacts and bricking. Would it be worth it to purchase one of these or gather some extra money and get a 780ti?

My Setup:

Corsair 750D

Asus Maximus Hero VI

Intel I7 4790k@ 4.8 ghz

16gb of Corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz ram

Kingston SSD now v300 120gb

Seagate Barracuda 2tb

Corsair Rm850 psu

Corsair H100i w/4x corsair sp120 push pull

3x Corsair Af140 Led fans

and an additional Corsair sp120 for bottom intake

Get the 290x, shouldn't be a big performance difference

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

It is but the new Nvidia cards are supposed to be direct competitors to amd's existing cards and not the new flagships.

Sapphire Tri-X.

Sapphire is the vendor to get when it comes ot AMD, and their Vapor-X and Toxic cards aren't worth the extra money over the Tri-X.

Love my Tri-X 290X. Haven't had a single issue with it

XFX's lifetime warranty is always tempting ;)

It sucks that the Tri-X doesn't have a blue cooler like the Vapor-X...the vapor just looks so much cooler (pun intended)

I wouldn't buy an XFX card if you paid me.

I had 6 XFX cards, all six were faulty in one way or another, all six had XFX making excuses and not wanting to do shit about them, all six went in the trash can.

I am in Canada that is $650 here

Yeah well that's too bad, lol.

I'm in Canada too but I can easily get it shipped to my relatives in the states then pick it up from there.

Obviously it can't be $590 all over the world...

290(x) is a great card. don't bother with the Asus DCU2 though... it is not meant for the Hawaii GPU. Sapphire is the best bet.

I had the ASUS DCUII 290x and apart from the fact that I hated the AMD drivers it was great. I sold it and bought the 780Ti because I'd just had enough of the AMD issues. I know someone else with the Twin Frozr and though I don't know what the ventilation in his case is like he says he gets crazy throttling.

I'd go 780Ti. I game at 1440p and I still find the performance is better (before I got the 750Ti PhysX card it was better too). If you're gaming at 1080p the performance difference is probably even higher.
