So, you had an issue with 5 of their cards and bought a 6.....k

I took 3 chances with them in terms of myself buying a card. Then I stopped buying any of their products

The other 3 were given to my by friends who upgraded

I never said I bought 6 XFX cards. Is this how people on here get so many post likes, by not using their brains

Hey folks! just wondering if I should purchase an R9 290x with aftermarket cooling or save extra for a 780ti. I've been seriously considering an R9 290x because of the price point and amd's never settle program, however I have been reading up alot on these cards and the consensus seems to be failures. Looking on Newegg, NCIX and Tom's Hardware for product reviews a LOT of people are reporting blackscreen, failures, overheating, rma's, artifacts and bricking. Would it be worth it to purchase one of these or gather some extra money and get a 780ti?

My Setup:

Corsair 750D

Asus Maximus Hero VI

Intel I7 4790k@ 4.8 ghz

16gb of Corsair vengeance pro 2400mhz ram

Kingston SSD now v300 120gb

Seagate Barracuda 2tb

Corsair Rm850 psu

Corsair H100i w/4x corsair sp120 push pull

3x Corsair Af140 Led fans

and an additional Corsair sp120 for bottom intake

To add, there is the downclocking problem and it is why i passed on a Gigabyte 290 after being told by one of their support agents that the downclocking problem came from the GPU's BIOS and that a new BIOS is out and i would have to flash my 290 to eradicate the issues. The Sapphire TRI-X and Vapor seems to not have these issues, so look toward those if you must get a GPU now if you can wait however, wait and see what the GTX9xx brings.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Just worried about temps and the card failing., but the 780ti is almost an extra $200. Is that $200 worth it or are the rumors about the 290x just blown out of proportion?

They are not really rumors, they are from actual owners who bought the card and experienced these various problems. There are of course people who have had no issues with the card at all. But you do run the risk of getting a card that will possibly fail on you. Which is the main reason why I didn't go with an R9 290 in the first place. There are just too many reviews of people who got the card and had to RMA because of various problems; even some instances where people got the card from RMA and continued to have issues. These aren't imaginary rumors that people are making up. On websites like Newegg you have to own the products to be able to make a review about it.

Temps shouldn't really be so much of an issue, as long as you don't go with an ASUS card or a reference card. What you mostly have to worry about is the Black Screen issue, second to that is the card simply dying on you. There is also the possibility of you getting a card and having no problems whatsoever but you still run the risk of having a problem more so than if you went with a 780/780Ti. Not that 780's or 780Ti's dont have their issues, but they are less apparent than compared to the 290/290X. So that is a decision you are going to have to make, whether you think the extra $200 is worth it for the 780 Ti. There's also the option of going with a 780 which is less expensive than the 780 Ti and offers pretty close performance to it (the difference is 15-20%).

The regular 780 is a very good card. I want something that will last me 3-5 years without having to upgrade

I have read the black-screen is a major issue with the r9 290x (certain versions) such as Gigabyte Windforce and the Asus variants, But the price point is unbeatable for what you get at around the same price of a aftermarket 780. I think ultimately I will go with a 290x and see how it works out for me. If I have any major issues or have to rma the card I will go with nvidia instead.

There's no card that will last 3-5 years without having to upgrade, it's just not how computer technology works. Cards generally have a 2 year life span, 3 if you start lowering settings. Your best bet is to wait for the 980 grab one of those hold onto to it for as long as you deem possible. But holding onto it for longer than 3 years will prove to be difficult.

3-5 years is really a pipe dream if you want smooth performance. For smooth performance you will be upgrading to every other new high end GPU when it comes out really.
