thernal compubd replacement on GPU. Whats this film for?

or actually not o didn't see it first but actually it just covers the part that makes contact to the pcb around the chip

Yeah, don't remove it, it probably stops the cooler from rubbing on the pcb around the chip and messing it up.

I'm replacing the thermal compound on a xfx radeon hd5870 and ran across a weird thing. I cleaned the compound off the heat sink and underneath it was a protective film, like the ones you peel off of cooler heatsinks normally. so does this stay on? I took a picture but can't really upload it as I'm on my phone right now..

If your temps werent super bad with the "film" on I would say to keep it on. Is it removable?

 

Edit: I think you should take it off, it probably was bad manufacturing like

Just clean it off. There should be direct contact to copper.

Yes it is. The card kept creating artifacts on screen and crashing the PC dafter a while of gaming... thats why I replace the thernal paste

I left it on, put new thermal paste on and yeah its running now.

Good choice to leave it on, its always better to try something safe before you start going around and removing stuff thats already there.

The thing is i tought the protection film covered the whole heatsink. it actually has a square cutout in the middle where it makes direct contact to the chip on the gpu. The rest around the chip it is pcb and thats where the protection film makes contact.

But I didn't see that at first, so that's why it makes sense to leave it on.

whow whow whow hold on so the bottom of the heatsink is covered by a plastic thingy and it has cut out in the middle becaus if that is true then i was wrong and its alright to leave it on i thought there was a piece of plastic coverering the part where the chip touches the copper
