Hey guys i have an r9 290x (paired with a i5 4440) and i have been experiencing some stuttering in bf4 recently (like this afternoon) and i realised that my GPU usage never went above 40%! How do you fix this?

Is the gpu overclocked? Is you power supply giving enough juice? When doing and stress testing open up gpuz and go to sensor tab, the second to last part there will be a graph with 5 readings options. It'll tell you if it's have Vol, ulti, Vrop, etc. you can hover the left tab so that you can see what each readings means. And when doing the stress testing it will exactly tell you why gpu is not giving enough power. I think it gives you reasons like; for the lack of power, for the lack of voltage ( when you overclock too high) for the lack of voltage reliability ( gpu vcore stability ), for gpu utilization, when cpu is bottleneck to gpu. Etc.

Go check it out.

What is your CPU usage?

When people say "This game isn't optimized at all." That's what they mean.

DayZ Rarely uses 40%. (In DayZ you can have quad-sli Titan Blacks and still be lagging on max settings for this reason.)

Who mentioned DayZ?

Drivers are the bottleneck here. A sports car will not perform great with a new "driver".

I also asume that stuttering are not the same as fps drops, right?

nope, i went from a usual 140 fps to like 40 fps constant during this afternoon

Okay, first make sure you update driver and such. And try to do a stress test with unigine Valley or heaven 4. See if the gpu usages stages on load 99%. And check the tab that I showed you ( in the perfcap reason) for normal use you should see vrel and vop. But the vddc voltage should stay stable. Of it dips down. Then try down clocking your gpu clock speed,

Okay, that's a huge drop. When you playing the game and voltages drop like that, the performance will drop as well as you not giving enough power for the card to push all those frequencies. Did you install a bios or a driver or something? Make sure that in you video card panel you set the power management as: performance!,

I have quite a shitty PSU (g600w) but my EVGA g2 850 watts is on it's way... Where do you find that?

Well it also could be psu, Okay it in amds control panel or catalyst control center and navigate to your 3d settings or video graphic settings. There should be an option to select power power management and select it as : performance ( sorry i don't have amd)

Also you may want to go to Windows power plan in control panel and select performance profile as well.

I didnt install any custom bios or driver! (although i did change from a nvidia GPU to an AMD one... I uninstalled every trace of NVIDIA shit on my comp...)

Well for you vcore to drop while you play, or doing extensive gpu test it'll Def drop performance to your game. Maybe it's set to adaptive mode or not getting enough power. You said you didn't overclock right?

Sometimes things like that has happened to me and I had to restart the pc and lower gpu core clock.
