While the video's points are all true, this not necessarily means it will be no performance gain. What Linus didn't let all that clear is what a 64 bits processor can achieve, and that is being able to work with a "word longitude" of 64 bits, which means that with a better encoding and with software meant specially to work on 64 bits, it can process data twice as long, completing a task much faster.

However as he said, there is a lot holding as back, from compilers and APIs (not talking about graphic APIs) to our OSs, that still are developed for 32 Bits, making the jump to 64 pretty much a matter of memory. On an ideal world, we would move all our processes to 64 bits, and make all the CPU instructions to work with such big amount of bits.

 

There are specialized pieces of software and OSs that bring the benefits of 64 bits, and even for 128 bit processors, but only used in servers and mainframes, nothing aimed at consumers.
