is 6300 good for gaming?

the fx6300 is vastly superior to the pentium g3258 for gaming op dont get missleaded here, youd need at least a mid-level core i3 to be as good.

As someone who's basically used both CPUs I'll agree with you on this one. Another thing to consider is the platform though, Z97 is a very nice place to be compared to 970/AM3+. Even on an Athlon 760K I had a much better gaming experience outside of single/dual core games.

The pentium has better single core performance

Which is good in MMOs and planetside 2, problem I found was moment I opened something else on my PC frames were dropping quite a bit as core 0 filled up

Buy local, I'm just telling you which components to get.  Start with the parts that I showed you, and then when you get enough money, buy an i5.

thx i'll consider that!

i experienced both as well, disabling cores...i must agree though that on z97 the upgrade path is wild!

yes but for most modern games its still not enough i tested this myself disabling ht and 2 cores and many struggle to keep 30fps even at 4.6ghz...dual core is no longer cutting it for modern games and pc ports.

For shit optimalised games like planetside 2 it will propably be better

It will be fine in 90% of cases, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want to play games like Arma and DayZ as those games really don't run well on FX chips.

Yes it is.

Sure, Without AA.

CPU is a bit underpowered though.

He can do AA without a problem. The CPU is underpowered to what...other CPUs but not games.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Why do people keep saying this? Arma and DayZ run perfectly fine on FX. Yes intel runs them better but no need to keep spreading false info that fx don't "run well" on those games.

My Pentium G3220 plays modern games just fine at high settings and gets 30+ FPS in modern games at high settings. It might gain more if I had a stronger GPU. Agreed that a Quad core like the FX 6300 is superior but a Pentium dual core is still pretty good for gaming.

I ran an FX chip for the last two years, and I had over 200 hours in DayZ, and over 50 in arma 3, and 40+ in Arma 2 while using it. FX chips do struggle in those games, especially Arma 3 and DayZ. I am not spreading false information, I am spreading accurate information based on experience from an impartial stance.  I have run both Intel chips and FX chips in those games, and I own both intel and FX chips now. They do struggle. It's a fact.

I still hear people saying they have 60 fps in 25m raids with their phenom thing and after they die -> "server was lagging". A 1GHz overclock hardly adds any performance, just when nothing is happening it's struggling feeding a GPU properly. Here's a comparison; youtube.com/watch?v=28md1sFJXBw

Start watching at 1:53, 17 fps that's far from playable for a FPS game :/

thats very slow and i can confirm those results i play arma 3 a lot and my fx-8320 at 4.6ghz and gtx 780 barely did any better
