Question regarding GPU and shitty Power Supply

Hey guys, I just bought a new GPU R9 280X and I connected it to a Sentey 450W Power Supply (very shitty). I had been using it the last couple of days underclocked without any problems. I also had connected both power pci express conectors (don't know if both are required, would like to know aswell).

Problem is my PC just shutdown and won't turned on for a brief period of time (5 mins). I'm now using the onboard card. Can something go wrong if I reconnect the GPU?

You should replace your psu with atleast a cx500... probably not enough amps getting fed to your GPU.

I currently have a shitty CPU Athlon II X2 250 so it doesnt use much power consumption. I'm only using this PSU until I get a new one next month, can it hold on that much?

You should replace your psu with atleast a cx500... probably not enough amps getting fed to your GPU.

You need both PCI-E connections. That's why they are there.

Your computer has a 24-pin connections on the motherboard. can you just not plug that in? No.

 

If the system is shutting down, then it could be:

  • Power supply is being overloaded, shutting down to prevent potential damage
  • CPU or other component(s) overheating and safety is kicking in

I don't think waht you said is totally accurate.

your "that's why they are there" statement is bs.

 

You can connect a motherboard with 4 pin cpu power even when there are 8 slots.

Even you can connect a gpu with power pins and would still be ok (this may not be the case with all the gpu's),

i know this beacuse i connected a gtx 550 ti without power and it was ok never had a problem once, i didn't even

underclock it.

 

In regards to the op's question i once conected this gtx 550 ti to a 250 watts psu and had no problem with it even, when

i connected the pci-e power cabble.

The OP is asking if the PCI-E connections are optional.

No they are not.

 

You can't compare a GTX 550 Ti to a R9-280.

The published maximum board power for a GTX 550 Ti is 116W. The PCI-Express bus interface can provide up to 75W alone.

A R9-280 has a TDP of 200W.

 

Your 4-pin indication is not 100% true. It depends on the CPU that is being utilized on the motherboard. The socket can only supply a limited amount of power -- just like the PCI-Express interface.

For comparison, the OP is wondering if the 4-pin CPU connection is optional --- let alone all 8-pins.

 

Of course you can put a run a system with a GTX 550 Ti on a 250W. At idle the power draw is low. My system only pulls a little over 100W while idling in Windows. I can even run it on a 250W.

Now stress the CPU and GPU. Putting my CPU and GPUs at full stress ramps it up to 542W (from the wall socket).
