Dual R9 280X or single R9 290?

So my Gigabyte R7970 is slowly dying (only a year old) and Gigabyte says they will send me a replacement (R9 280X) and i can buy another for crossfire, or i can save a little more and buy a single R9 290. Which would be the better option for future proofing? Does anyone know if the problems with crossfire have gone with driver updates?

Get a second 280x if you need the additional performance.

 

Or, wait until you need more performance and then see what cards are around then.

The issues of CFX are nowhere near as bad as they used to be, but I would just save some money and see if you can pay them the difference for a 290.

well, i want to get the RMA for my 7970, so i would just have a brand new 280X with no system to use it in :P

ive got an 850W PSU, and my Shinobi XL is full of fans

well, i'm going 1440p soon, so the dual 280X will perform better than a single 290, and run cooler

Crossfire for the win! Although Crossfire still has issues in some games, you will get insane performance out of that combo.

yeah, and my i5 is performing almost as good as an i7 3770 according to Cinebench, so a lot of performance on that side of things

how is your 7970 dying? 

performance is dropping rapidly, can't use a second monitor or else it really slows down, and if i go even 1Mhz over the stock 1000Mhz on the core, the DVI port shows a corrupt image on reboot, also it runs hot and loud unless i run a custom fan curve to keep it quiet

ok, just ordered the 280X from NCIX, got the Rev 2.0 with the new cooler, even though their pic shows the old cooler...
