Strix Pro Headphones

Hello Linus community, I'm new.

I'm on the hunt for new headphones, and Strix Pro have caught my attention.

My current headphones are the new Logitech G230 headphones, I used the G35 before that.

I'm not satisfied with the G230 because they're more uncomfortable than the G35, they don't have those "notches" to tell how far you've extended one or the other of the headphone "arms" like the G35 does. The padding is also tougher and the top rim is narrower and for that reason uncomfortable (immediately noticeable) and the earpads are also stiffer but not quite as uncomfortable as the top rim.

So I heard about Strix Pro, and noticed that they had some impressively sized (60mm) drivers on there. Both logitech G230 and G35 had 50mm drivers and to my ears the G35 and G230 sound just about exactly the same. So I'm wondering, just how much (or simply how exactly) do driver sizes impact the sound?

Has anyone used the Strix Pro?

Linus! please do a review.

One thing for sure, driver size does not say anything about sound quality. Generally, bigger driver/diaphragm size is better at reproducing lower frequencies, because it could move more air. Smaller driver/diaphragm size is better at reproducing higher frequencies, because it could vibrate faster.

Talking about sizes of the diaphragms reminded me, I think the largest diaphragm sizes in headphones are the planar and electrostatic ones.

IMG_4322_zpsff2f0e22.jpg

Left is a 50mm (5cm) diameter dynamic driver (only the thing inside the white circle, the rest is just mounting/housing), right is a planar driver. The diaphragm is torn, but had it not, it would take that whole surface across the silver frame, measuring 85mm (8,5cm) diameter, measured inside the silver frame. I guess that's why planars have good low frequencies.... :)

All the numbers in the spec are just to give some general idea about the headphone, and how it will behave. There are no immediate way of knowing whether a headphone sounds good or not. The only way to know is to try them and judge them for yourself. If you can't do that, then read reviews about them, but it's a bit of hits and misses, as audio is a very subjective matter.

If you're looking for good sound quality, then just go with renowned audio brands, like Sennheisers, AKG, etc.

Yeah.

Low frequencies is definitely something I enjoy, so this is partly why I've liked G35, they were good with low frequencies but also adequately crisp on the higher frequencies.

Is there any reason that driver size would negatively impact high frequencies?

To be quite honest, I've heard that the mic on the Strix is bad (online reviews/comments) and I haven't heard a lot of good things about the sennheiser mics. I'm becoming more and more interested in just going straight out sennheiser/AKG or maybe audio technica headphones w/o mic and just buying a standalone microphone.

That is what we generally recommend for price to performance ratio alone. Is there a specific budget range we should be looking at?

I am undecided on the budget, what I'm looking for is simply a better experience than a Logitech G35 because that is just about the best I've had to this date.

Suffice to say that G35 is currently priced at 130 USD and I might be convinced to spend that price, or a little higher for something that is more comfortable and most importantly delivers a satisfactory listening experience.

It just needs to be either in-ear, or over-ear, absolutely never on-ear.

GG my contradicting-yourself experience.

Eh? contradicting?

I think it's not that bigger driver would negatively impact high frequencies. It's just when compared between bigger and smaller drivers, high frequencies sounds better on smaller drivers, and low frequencies sounds better on bigger driver. That's why a popular standing or table speaker design is the 3 way speaker, with 3 drivers varying in sizes. Smallest to handle highs, mid size to handle mids, and biggest size to handle lows.

The PC 350 is at a really good price right now.

You said, "driver size does not say anything about sound quality" but then continued to explain how driver size could effect bass and treble performance.

Hmmm, I said performance (not the exact word, but okay, performance), not quality though. It's like saying 'longer focal-length lenses perform better when taking close up shots, while shorter focal-length lenses perform better when taking wide shots', but of course focal-length of a lens does not say anything about the image quality the lens itself yields/produce.

I'm just personally assuming that larger driver would be better for a headphone, but there are probably a lot of other factors that contribute to sound quality that I might be completely oblivious to.

I can understand the necessity of different elements in a living-room speaker but that kind of layout is, well, not welcome inside a headphone (from what I've experienced(and heard from others regarding headphones with multiple elements)) smaller drivers and diaphragms have a tendency to sound flimsy to me (for a lack of a better word). This leads me to believe that the Strix Pro might have quite decent audio quality (admittedly I'm no expert on the subject)

The PC 350 is at a really good price right now.

Thanks for the suggestion. The description of the headset seems a bit vague, I find it hard to commit to a purchase when I don't know anything (factual/statistical) about the headset.

Most of the information out there makes it seem like it's a close deviation of the 500 series (HD 518, 558, and 598) or the 380 Pro. With the integrated mic, that makes it well priced, because good standalone mics start around $50 unless you want to do some modding.

Just reword it to something like driver size doesn't mean everything, Idk :P. the way you wrote it makes it sound like a pair of headphones could have 2mm drivers and it wouldn't matter, then you say it can effect the sound quality.

I don't care that much dude, just point it out to you that it sounds like you're contradicting yourself.
