General question about hdd speed and fiber download speed

I Just don't know the mechanism that HDDs work with fiber downloads

As far as I remember fiber downloads can reach 700 MB/sec, while HDD write speed is about 40 or 80 MB/sec-I don't remember actually- So how does it work ?? Does fiber download only work on ssds to get full speed or what :/

You know, I've always wondered this.

 

My guess is the extra information gets stored in the RAM or something like that?

you talk about FTTH? then remember... 700 Mb/s = 87,5 MB/s...

Also part of the data if there's not enough disk bandwidth is stored in RAM or download speed is throttled (by storage bottleneck)

Good question, actually never thought of that. But this also makes me cry a bit because I can only dream of a 700MB/s download speed.

I can't really give you a good answer about how the HDDs handle fiber speeds, but I am pretty sure that fiber can go a lot higher than 700 mb/sec... Isn't Google Fiber both fiber and capable of download/upload speeds of 1 Gb/sec (1000 mb/sec) and in Japan they have some ISPs with twice that?

Downloads are usually cached in RAM before it reaches the hard drive.

Don't worry. 5.6Gbps would probably require you to update your LAN adapter at any rate :P

I think he meant to say 700 mbps, not 700 MB/s. Because even Google Fiber is only ~250 MB/s (1,000 mbps).

700MB/s + unlimited data usage = DOWNLOAD THE INTERNET

Internet Service Providers use "mbps" (megabits per second) instead of "MB/s" (megabytes per second) because megabits is a smaller unit. We're all pretty much used to reading in megabytes and not megabits, so ISPs like to use megabits instead because it appears faster than megabytes, since megabits is a smaller unit. 1 gigabit per second, sounds like a lot right? But it's actually only around ~250 megabytes per second (250 megabytes per second is still deadly fast). If you were a company, which would you use to advertise. :)

1 byte is 8 bits. 1000 Gbps = 125 MBps.

Yea I know, I just for some reason thought I remembered 1gbps was 256 mbps
