VRAM on 1200p or 1440p.

Winther

Hello!

I guess there are probably alot of questions about the 780 right now, but I would like you guys take on wether or not to get a 3gb 780 or wait and get a 6gb 780.

I won't be gaming in surround or 3D, but I might get a 2560x1440 monitor at some point, and maybe even a 4k in a few years. I played crysis 3 in 1200p when I had my gtx670, and it used over 1.6gb og vram so I was going to get a 4gb card, but then the rumors began about the 780 releasing soon so I waited and now I dont know if 3gb will be enough for 1440p and maybe 4k to "future proof" it a little.. :)

what is you take on that?

Really depending on the price difference. I said 6Gb for 4K but 3Gb is prefect for 1440/1600P

I'd spend a little more for the 6gb version just to have the future compatibility. For if you ever get multiple monitors or move up to 2.5k or even 4k :)

lol, i dont see the point in future compatibility. The card is way to weak to drive a 4k display and good game qualities. So if you ever get a 4k (when they are under 20000$ lol) you should get a new, at that time awesome graphics card, like Maxwell.

Is there any info on whether they're going to make a 6gb version anytime soon? I would have thought that would remove one of the only remaining reasons to buy a titan.

6GB as long as the price difference is minor. Just for future proofing.

I would say go with the 3gb version because 4k will not be consumer level for a couple years.

WHERE IS G.FREEMAN!

The more vram you have the better imo, id rather pay a bit more and never care about that again. At least if the 6gb version isnt 100dollars more, if its like >50 then id go for it!

6GB. Like Jimbo said, it's the only reason i'm still considering a titan. Games like skyrim modded with 2k-4k texture packs eat up 3gb for lunch :P

One of my mates used up 5.4gb with dual titans on a U3011. That game modded out is a vram WHORE!

3gb is enough for 1200 or 1440p but if the price difference is small then get the 6gb.

3gb is fine for 1440p

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18497413

Here is a thread from the OCUK forums showing vram usage at different resolutions.

Also i dont think a single 780 or even a Titan is actually fast enough to utilise that much vram. Its more meant for people who are going to be going sli for 3 1080p or 3 1440p monitors.

I dont know, but it would be odd if there wasnt I think. alot of the last gen GTX models had versions with double the vram and I bet nvidias partners will do the same for this new gen.. :)

3gb (which amd has had for  while) because im using 900mb at 1080p most of the time so 3gb should be fine for 2560x1600 and as for 4k, take 780 benchmarks and divide by 4, its not going to happen unless you put everything on low...

What you should do is buy two 4GB 670's or 680's. You're gonna need two cards for that resolution for the VRAM to even go over 2GB. I've ran two 4GB 670's at 1440p and the VRAM went above 2GB. Running a single card at that resolution you won't see more then 2GB of VRAM being used because you have to turn down all the memory hungry settings to get playable frame rates.

Personally don't bother with the 780 unless you plan on buying more then one. The 780 isn't the cure for a single card at higher resolutions. If you can justify paying $1300 for two 780's VS. $900 for two 670 4GB's then go for it. Just don't be surprised when you're only getting 20fps more for $400 more.

The 780 is a complete joke at $650! The performance increase is nothing remarkable over last gen cards. Now if they priced them at $500 I'd be a believer but that's not going to happen.

I would say 3GB if you're going for the 780. I do not forsee anytime in the future where the 780 will have enough power to drive graphical resolution and textures amounting to a whopping 6GB so save yourself money and grab the 3GB.

Ignore the people screaming 'Go for as much vram as you can!' Just because of a previous argument, judge and gauge what you need and what is the limiting factor of the component before you jump the gun which in this case would likely be graphical processing power. (The 780's performance increment is not impressive at all)

Like FluffyNuggets said, personally, considering how the prices are already falling, i would get two 4GB 680s, you would get far greater value for your money than purchasing a 780. Or, you can wait and see the 770 before committing a purchase.

There would be a VRAM bottleneck in Crysis 3 at that resolution.
