Need suggestions on my first gaming build

Rick03038

Hi everyone,

I am planning out my first gaming build and I need your suggestions. I have been watching YouTube, Linus's Channel, NewEgg channel and others trying to decide what parts to buy and how to build it. The actual building doesn't seem that difficult. I am planning on reusing the case and DVD drive I have now and replace the guts completely. This is what I am thinking of.....

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Rick03038/saved/XyhFf7

CPU Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core$234.66

Motherboard MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX LGA1150$124.99

Memory Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600$82.99

Storage A-Data XPG SX900 128GB 2.5" SSD$75.81, Samsung 840 EVO 750GB 2.5" SSD$389.99

Video Card Asus GeForce GTX 760 X2 4GB DirectCU II$599.99

Power Supply EVGA 1000W ATX12V$142.98

Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro - 64-bit (OEM) (64-bit)$128.98

Total:  $1780.39

I am more concerned with performance, especially since it will be strictly a gaming rig. I was think of the 2 SSD's, one for the OS and the other for games. Mostly Battlefield series, Medal of Honor and maybe some Steam stuff.

Of course there is the Intel/AMD debate which can go on forever as we all know. Also the i5 vs i7 debates

As far as a CPU cooler I have no idea. Water or Air and what brand.

The 1000 watt PSU because I am thinking of going SLI someday plus my estimated wattage is 517 watts before a cooler. Also I have never overclocked before and would be a little nervous about it so I'm not sure if I should spend the extra money on an unlocked CPU or not. It seems pretty easy for what I see online.

I figure I had this one built in 2009 and cost me $2700 and now it can't get out of its own way.

I'm not planning on the build for another few months until I get more information ( and money ), but I want something that will last me awhile..

Sorry for the long posting and thanking everyone on advance for their help, knowledge and suggestions,

Rick the newbie computer killer... I mean builder

@Rick03038 Get an MSI Z97 Gaming 7, get a H100i, swap the 840 evo with a WD Black 4TB and swap the GPU with a 280x or 290 depending on your budget(post your budget pls). Also, if SLI go 750w if CF go 850w

My Current PC Codename: Scrapper

Spoiler

Intel i5-3570 | Some LGA 1155 MOBO Some Generic DDR3 8GB 1600Mhz | PowerColor RX 560 2GB | Recycled HP Case Crucial MX100 128GB 1TB WD Blue 7200RPM | Some Generic 500w PSU | Intel Stock Cooler

Looks good, though I'd swap the 840 evo out for a WD Blue/Black, and throw in a Hyper 212 Evo or H100i.

Also don't get the 4GB GTX 760, 2GB is more than enough for 1080p, and you will hit the limit of the card before you get near the VRAM limit., also I suggest getting an EVGA card with the ACX cooler.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

this ^ but get a wd blue or seagate barrcuda depending on your budget, and get a h100i or hyper 212 evo instead

Im not too concerned with a budget. Im thinking of spending in the $2000 range to get a high performance build. I was also thinking instead of the second SSD getting a 10,000 rpm drive. Any ideas on that. I guess because my current computer runs so bad and so slow I want to gain speed getting into the games instead of listening to everyone play while I am still loading.

Would the 2 4gig cards be necessary or just better for the future surround gaming?

@Rick03038,

I would suggest an Asus motherboard. A different memory kit so that there would be no conflicts if a large cpu air cooler were selected.

A single 1TB ssd makes more sense to me. (If need be it could be divided into logical volumes.) Having two separate drives for data and system is not going to result in any performance benefit.

I would suggest a single GTX 780 Ti. The benchmarks I have seen suggest that it is within a couple of fps as the Mars 760 with better power consumption, a wider and faster memory bus, and 1GB more VRAM.

An 850W is more than enough to SLI two GTX 780 Ti.

Windows 8.1 Pro is rarely needed for personal systems.

Without knowing what case this will all be housed in it really isn't possible to suggest a cpu cooling solution.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

You can also get one 290 but when I've read that you also going to do SLI that's why I recommended CF; and yes, for surround gaming also

Thanks to everyone who sent in all the great suggestions. I'm not against going AMD for all you AMD folks out there. I do hear that the Intel will be a little better.
