Hello, My friend has had this old pc sitting around for a few months. When he built the pc he said it was able to turn on but he couldn't get it to post. When I opened it up, I noticed that the mobo was screwed into the mob tray with the stand offs. Could this potentially short the board? I couldn't even get the psu fan blades to turn on. When I removed the CMOS and tried to start it up again, the blades spun a little and nothing else happened.

So I'm not sure if there is anything else I could try to do and fix it.

try removing the board from the case and test it on a table

make sure you are grounded

Wait. What?!

So...

--- [stand off] --- [Mobo] ---- [motherboard tray] --->

instead of

--- [screw] ---- [Mobo] ---> [stand off] ---> [motherboard tray] -->

If so, you're friend really goofed up building his PC. Big time.

Heh, that is like doing the complete opposite of grounding the motherboard.

I wouldn't be surprised if he shorted the motherboard and killed it -- hoping it didn't take anything else down with it.

In this situation it would be best  to test every part individually.

  • Make sure the PSU is okay and undamaged
  • Check the RAM modules to see if they've been fried or not
  • See if the motherboard and/or CPU is still alive
  • Check the HDD's
  • See if the graphics card (if applicable) is still in operating condition
  • etc

I had to double take that sentence also. I have heard people screwing mobo to case without standoffs, but not someone using the standoffs to attached the mobo
