New gaming build help, please

johnnyTheMac

1. Budget & Location
Budget: $1200 USD

Florida, USA

2. Aim
The rig will be mostly used for gaming (all types of gaming - FPS, RPG, RTS...etc). However, it will also be used for Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, and of course, surfing the web lol. I also am looking to go small and, for lack of a better term, silent.

3. Monitors
Already monitors.

4. Peripherals
Already have all peripherals.

5. Why are you upgrading?
Not upgrading, just a new build.

Thank you in advance for any and all responses!

Johnny

Thank you for the fast response!

That looks like a great build. So, you think the R9 290 instead of a 780 or anything? Sorry if that is a stupid question...just wondering.

A 290 is faster than a 780, give or take, and costs less.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the really fast responses everyone!

Does a liquid cooler make that much of a difference in temps and noise compared to the ones listed?

The ones we listed perform pretty darn well compared to say an H100i. And since their restrictions are lower you can run the fans at a low RPM and make the system pretty quiet.

Great! So, would I have to get any more fans, or should I be good with the ones that come with the case and CPU cooler?

You should be good in I think every single case. (pun intended.. I knock myself out..) Although with the Define R4 I would grab another fan, but really the choice for a case is all up to what you prefer with looks.

Like @AlwaysFSX said the cooler we both chose will be really good especially for the price and compared to H100i which would be about double you are better off spending less on an air cooler and allocate the money somewhere else especially with your budget.

Speaking of that... I'm the only one that fit 16 gigs of ram actually in the budget. :P And still have a great system. :D

I don't plan on overclocking. Do you think I should go with the non "K" version? And, is there that much of a difference between the i5 and the i7? Do you think I can get away with just using the stock CPU cooler? I do not plan on overclocking or anything, just gaming and work.

Go for this build if you don't OC, the Xeon is very very good because it has the power of an i7 with hyperthreading while only 20$ more expensive than the i5 K version
