Once it's set up, anyone could use ubuntu, you just need to install it for her. Especially if all she needs is opening chromium, which has its own big fat icon she can click.

I don't think a raspberry pi is fast enough to play youtube video's, which a lot of people consider general internet browsing. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Come on guys a raspberry pi while cheap is not exactly a great PC plus the learning curve for some people is a bit much ><

For like $300 that is probably a decent machine, a cheap prebuilt will suit that task just fine though you could build something quite nice for $200-$300 also!

Or a chromebook / chromebox might be a good idea too

Raspberry Pi is way too underpowered for web browsing. It's a basic dev platform and a decent media player but that's about it.

Build a cheap PC yourself, get a Chromebox/Chromebook, or one of those eBay Android stick thingies

I would go Media PC/Browsing PC combo and get something like this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nWfmNG

this will be also very low power since that APU has only 25W TDP.

For those that recommend Raspberry pi.. come on guys. Just because he want to just browse on it doesent mean that he want to have slide show experience while doing it. Also video playback is something that pi can handle very hard at 1080p especialy if you are doing another things with it while runing videos.

Why not get an older tablet for basic web browsing?  At least it comes with a screen.

A PC with a 3.8Ghz quad-core processor is hardly a facebook machine for your parents/grandparents.  That shellshocker is actually a good deal, I'm thinking for for dormroom students.  Get it, play with virtualization, cause...why not?

(edit:  unless your talking about the second one, the dell, then yea.  that is a pretty low rent system)

It can play quake 3 at 1080p. it's MORE than enough for web browsing.

So can a Pentium 3, but you wouldn't wanna browse the web on one of those. RPi is slow and shit. It is not fit for general daily usage.

Just because the RPi has a good GPU doesn't mean it doesn't have the CPU equivalent to an iPhone 4.
