CPU Temp 105c

Go to solution Solved by Prokart2000,

I don't hear it running and when I touch the water block itself I feel no vibration.

Could the pump be defective? It makes sense because when I feel the outputs of the fans its not hot at all.

the pump i would say then

So I've came to the conclusion with the help of all of you that my pump doesn't work. I know the H100i is turning on because the LED Corsair light thingy turns on, it's just the pump isn't doing anything. I can't hear it and when I touch the water block itself I don't feel any vibrations; 1 tube is just hot to the touch whilst the other tube is cool which leads me to believe that the water isn't flowing. To prove this I double checked the heat exhaust of the radiator that the fans should be removing. The air is cool, no heat. That just proved that the water isn't flowing.

I'll get a RMA for this as soon as I can.

Thanks.

Original Post

Okay, I just wanted to check how my CPU Temp is because it's rather hot here in California, so I download Core Temp and I see it's at about 50c idle!

I then checked what the temp is on full load using Prime95 and it's 105c!

It's actually throttling itself because it's getting so hot!

I don't know how this is so hot! I have a Corsair H100i and I haven't changed anything since like June!

Could it be the motherboard? I was planning on having it RMAed because 1 DIMM slot doesn't work so I can't use my full 16GB of ram.

Clean everything, filters, your floor, dust it all. Change the thermal paste and make sure it's applied properly. Make sure you have good airflow in your case and that the case isn't in a place in the room that will suffocate it. If there's still throttling then replace the h100i or get a better cooler.

My money's on that the cooler isn't mounted properly.

Replace the thermal paste. Then remount the H100i using small plastic washers between the motherboard and backplate.

Okay, I just replaced the thermal paste and made sure the pump was mounted correctly.

There is no change.

It's still hitting 105c. I touched both tubes and 1 feels cool and the other is incredibly hot!

I have my fans in a pull configuration if that matters at all.

My money is on the fact the the voltage regulator onboard the CPU is being taxed to hell, that and the fact that you are running Prime95 on an AVX enabled CPU.

Try an non AVX benchmark / torture test and report back with your temps.

PS: The reason for your high temps are due to the fact that AVX workloads actually draw more CPU power on Ivy bridge and up. As such the motherboard will increase the voltage somewhat to compensate for vdroop.

It sounds like the processor is getting too much voltage than recommended. What processor are you using and what is its current clock speed and voltage under load?

dont use prime 95 use aida 64

Why? Prime95 is fine for stress testing. Plus it's free unlike aida64

Ah ok. I was under the assumption that you'd have to pay to use that software. But Prime95 is also good since you want to stress test everything (hence the words "torture test")

I think it's something with the H100i itself. I made sure it was all mounted correctly and I re-did the thermal paste.

I've set the CPU to 3.9GHz @ 1.1v and even after re-doing everything the temps are the same. The CPU even throttles itself.

The reason I'm thinking it's the unit itself is because my idle temps are still in the 50's, while under full load its reaching 105.

Yes, it's connected using SATA, the LED Corsair thingy turns on, and 1 tube feels cool whilst the other feels hot.

I don't hear it running and when I touch the water block itself I feel no vibration.

Could the pump be defective? It makes sense because when I feel the outputs of the fans its not hot at all.

Try a different thermal compound or try a different cooler. Do you have some spare cooler lying round you could shove in there to test?

can you feel the water moving through the tubes and my pump is only a small vibration so see if you can feel the water moving

Nope, I don't feel anything. I really think the pump isn't working at all and the water is just sitting there because I can feel how hot the outflow tube is and when I try to feel the heat from the exhaust of the fans it's non-existent.
