Do you even gaming headset bro?

Ok, I have £100 max to spend on a gaming headset.

After long nights of browsing the interwebs, I have considered:

Razer Kraken 7.1

Steelseries Siberia Elites

Roccat Kave 5.1

I got to a point where I'd narrowed it down to either the CM Storm Pulse-R or the Corsair Vengeance 1500.

Pulse-R:

*Uses analog, could use it on my nidia shield tablet

*Detacheable mic, could simply use as headphones (Two birds, one stone)

*Lovely metal finish

*Cheaper

-Only stereo

-Bad in-line controls (Bulky, annoying and badly designed)

Vengeance 1500:

*7.1 surround

*7.1 surround

*7.1 surround

*Is aparrently more comfortable

-slightly more expensive

-fixed mic (Can't wear on train etc for music)

-USB, uses drivers

-USB, can't work with an nVidia Shield Tablet

I may add things to the pro's and con's, but guys I really need some help here. Is 7.1 surround actually all that? I can generally tell prettymuch where people and things are in games with normal stereo so I want to know how substantial the difference is, because if 7.1 isn't much different then I will get the Pulse-R's.

Please leave suggestions for other headsets in the replies and give me sme advice because I am really stuck here.

I would suggest getting a nice pair of headphones like AudioTechnica ATH M50s or Sennheiser HD 558 and get a Modmic to go with it. By doing that you get a good sounding headset and great mic!

I love having speakers surround you when you game, it is so much different then anything you could ever get out of headphones, and the fact that your whole body shacks when you play FPS shooter games is just out of this world.

Good stereo headphones will do just fine in surround, if not better due to higher overall sound quality. If you need further surround effects, Razer's surround software is FREE and works with any headphones.

Gaming headsets themselves are very expensive for the quality you get, so a common recommendation for people who bother doing their research is to get proper stereo headphones from an audio company and pair them with a clip-on or a desktop mic.

Currently, looking at amazon.co.uk, there are good deals on Pioneer SE-1000 (open), CHC Silverado (closed) and Sennheiser 518 (open) headphones. Open headphones tend to have wider soundstage (=better surround effect) and a bit more "life like" sound signature, but leak some sound and doesn't isolate you that well from outside world (=not good if you live next to a turbine or something loud like that). Closed headphones have a bit more bass oomph and isolate you better, but have narrower soundstage and more "in your head" sound signature.

Zalman's ZM-MIC1 clip-on mic is very cheap (around £8) and is as good as any gaming headset mic. It attaches to the headphone cord so its not too much of a hassle.

If you must have a headset, then HyperX Cloud (or QPAD QH-90 which Cloud are rebadge of) is the best option for your budget since they are made in co-operation with a real audio company.

Ive found that proprietary headsets like my Audio Techinca ATHM50's (Or whatever your taste is)  and a dedicated mic (I have a Blue Yeti) work in that you have 2 high quality items meant for added clarity, but I've also heard that the convenience of a 2 in 1 is something people often prefer and because it costs less. I'm just sharing my preference though.

Headsets actually cost a lot more than headphones + mic if quality is the main concern.
