Hello all

thank you for reading my post. I am currently doing research on doing a build for my younger brother before he goes off to University. That  being said, i have not built a computer in a number of years and am looking for feedback on the components chosen for this build. This rig will be used for everything from homework to gaming and i was wondering if the  components i have chosen will work with one another.

it should be noted that we are choosing to go the micro atx route owing to the limited amount of space that he is going to have in his dorm, along with the ease of transport that it offers.

I ask that people do not reply with recommendations regarding better components as the ones chosen for this build are done so with a budget in mind. That being said, the build components do not list any cooling or heatsink as that is still up in the air along with being "cheep" in comparison to the rest of the build.

@aboulay

Welcome to the forums. Might I ask what your location is and what your budget is? Also I would like to know what he is going to do with his system since he might not need an I7.

$30 more and you can get a Sapphire TRi-x R9 290 which blows the 770 away.

It hardly blows it away.

http://b-i.forbesimg.com/jasonevangelho/files/2013/11/290-versus-GTX-780.png

And that's against a 780.

Nuff said.

Even more nuff said.

And again.

The R9 290 is generally 10-20% ahead in fps and that for only $30 more? R9 290 blows it away.

That is slightly worse if anything. The psu won't allow for sli if needed. That Sandisk SSD is inferior to the Samsung Evo.

The build budget is 1500 before tax. thank you so far for the recommendations and also he has an nshield and is team green :S.Furthermore the build is needed to be completed in 2 weeks hence the "rush". Once again, he would also prefer mini ATX due to desk size and limited space in dorm

thanks in advance guys :) loving the food for thought so far.

Besides being more wattage than needed for the build, the HX-750 is too long to fit in the case along with the MSI GTX 770.

If size is such a concern you might consider an mITX build, see below. Has the advantage of on-board WiFi which should make things easier in a dorm. I doubt an i7-4790K is really needed, but I did leave it in the build. The memory kit was chosen for cost, not the slightly better speed. The psu is more than sufficient for the build and is only 140 mm long.

To answer more questions in in Toronto Ontario Canada and the reasoning behind the i7 is future upgradability compatability. Basically as parents are bankrolling his build it allows him to up the other components in a years time if he chooses without having to complicate things with a new cpu and motherboard

Furthermore he is rather attached to the case chosen. Or at least bitfenix in general. And I'm finding it hard to change his mind onto a different.... Astetically pleasing case

Canadian pricing and in a Phenom chassis.

At this point any advice at all mind you I wouldn't mind also knowing for my knowledge what was wrong with my original build. Or is it simply the reliability of the component. :) . As the post states it has been a while and I wouldn't mind obtaining additional knowledge and understanding as I am also planning on treating myself to a new rig in the fall. Thanks again for all the feedback. Mice to know there are still some parts of the Internet that are old school genuine and not troll bate

Your original build was pretty good. The only points to note would be the ones mentioned by @brob above in post #12. Apart from that it was a good selection of components.
