I decided to test out my CPU at full load and it turns out it's hitting in the low 90's when rendering a video from After Effects (which has a lot of blur added to it which is very intensive).

I'm using the stock cooler by the way.

What do I do? It was only about 1 or 2 minutes into the render and I closed it as I was too afraid my CPU would throttle.

Thanks,

Blueprint

Buy a cooler.  You can find ones that are decent for like 20 bucks.

Throttling is not dangers just FYI

I would replace the stock cooler if it is not providing adequate cooling, what processor?

First of all, the stock cooler sucks. A lot.

Second, give a look at this (even if it is from previous Intel gen CPUs)
http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition

As you can see, 94 degrees is nothing too much. My overclocked 3570k hit 100 degress during a Prime95 torture test once but it didn't ruin it.

If your CPU is overclocked then you MUST use an aftermarket cooler, there is no doubt about this.

Reaching 90-100 degrees is nothing serious at full load. However that temperature should stay just for a few moments and not all the time.

What is your ambient temperature?

Whats your Vcore? Even with stock it shouldn't be that high, get an aftermarket cooler, evo 212 can be found for 25 quid.

What is your ambient temperature? What CPU are we dealing with here? (if you are one of the PC spec in sigs brigade I can't see it because I hide sigs)

Ambient is around 37c and it's the 4790k.

If that's your ambient that's high, but I think you mean that's the idle temperature?

Overall the high temps aren't dangerous but they are high and considering how cheaply you can get something like a 212 EVO I'd definitely go down that route if possible.

Do your CPU a favour and upgrade the cooler.

Sorry derp yeah, that's my idle temp, I think my ambient is around 23-26?

It's just them stock cooler blues man, swap that shit out for something better.

212 EVO is only £25 and performs a huge amount better than stock cooler, this would be my course of action here.

Right, so, two solutions to your problem:

NH-D15 (air cooler)

An AIO water-cooler (Kraken X61/H220X seem to be the leaders here)

Either way, you need to get that stock CPU cooler off your CPU if you want to lower the temp. The CPU itself will trip a thermal lockout if it gets too hot (normally 100C) at which point your computer will magically shut off. No warning, no bluescreen, and it won't power back on for 2-10 minutes (depending on how long it takes the heatsink to passively cool the CPU below 85C or so). This feature cannot be disabled and is built into pretty much every desktop grade CPU since 2000. Some CPUs lockout before 100C, some after. 100C is a good ballpark.

As for the differences between the air and water coolers I mentioned...The air cooler is *massive*. It weighs about 3 lbs, and is physically large (150mm wide, 160mm tall, approx). The mounting kit for it will keep your mobo from snapping, but if you transport your PC frequently...you'll probably want an AIO.

As for cooling performance, the air cooler and AIOs are within 2-3C of each other, and all of them are at least 30C better than the stock cooler.

In the end, the name of the game is surface area. The air cooler and the AIOs both offer a straight upgrade in available cooling surface area over your current stock cooler. The AIOs pack all this surface area into a radiator, the air coolers have massive fin structures sitting on top of the CPU. Thermodynamically, they work the same way.

Yea, generally even for heavy rendering or video editing the normal Intel stock cooler is not enough, never-mind for Overclocking..

I would get a EVO 212, they are $25-30 on Amazon.

The stock heat sinks generally wasn't meant for anything other than basic pc functions.

^^^^ could be Probably is your problem. Was this problem always like this and is this related to the build in your signature?

I only built it recently and yes it does relate to my sig.

Have you done any overclocking? If so don't on a stock cooler. You ambient is quiet high, higher than mine.... :o good lord 37C you sitting under a shed somewhere or something :D. How it the airflow in your system.....positive..... negative.....you have no idea you just left the configuration the case came with...what?

37 is not my ambient, that was a mistake. 37 is my idle temp but about 23 is my ambient. And yeah I left the fan config as I found it in the case. And no I haven't done any overclocking.

Well you need a proper CPU cooler. My ambient is like 34C on a hot day and with watercooling i idle at 30C and max temps for my 47Ghz OC is 55C
