How stupid is this idea? (dying my Noctua cpu fan)

Call me crazy but at some point I plan on dying my NH-C12P Noctua fan (which cools my CPU) by following this guide I found http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=35185 . so if anyone is interested in a couple of months time I plan on actually doing this to my CPU fan and writing out a more comprehensive guide than this one. I will also do temperature tests before and after the dying of the fan, I will run a similar test to Linus's CPU cooler tests. I will do this to see whether dying the fans causes a drop in performance (don't worry i'm an engineer nearly, not really i'm in my first year but still... science!!! B)). If this goes successfully I will filled my entire computer with dyed Noctua fans. now before you say anything I realise there is already a post about dying Noctua fans but I think it will be interesting to see how a dyed fan will affect a CPU.

my CPU cooler: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002W81KTI/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and destroy my computer's CPU.  :P

But seriously though, is this a bad idea or would you like to see me post pictures of my failure/unlikely success in a guide?

not a bad idea...as noctuas look HIDEOUS.

also pics or it didnt happen

EDIT: make sure you don't spray the paint too much or it will accumulate on the edge of the blade. I made that mistake when painting some corsair fans white for my 600T

Double EDIT: pls change your DP -_-

In theory, it's a great Idea, however you really need to be careful of balancing.

I know right, I'm hoping that if the consistency of the dye is even, the technique I plan on using should deal with that.

I agree noctuas make my eyes bleed.  :D

By the way I plan on dyeing them so spreading it evenly shouldn't be a problem.

This is a good idea but you would have to be careful. And since you're dying the fan it shouldn't have any added weight.

just dis-assemble then spray it one... in my opinion its less risky and will give a cleaner result

the dying process does not add any weight to the assembly.

you are going to have to subject the fan to some high heat for a long time

to get any penetration into the nylon material. a couple have tried to bake/dye

their fans with minimal looks alteration. they work fine, but look even worse as

they look incomplete or a lot of color bleeding.

but good luck with the project and let us know how it went with pic and written guide.

hopefully it'll turn out better than the above..

Are you sure, dyeing it must do something to the weight. However I'm not very good at chemistry .

But we will see after the results were difference it makes... Hopefully.

I don't know about it being better than that but thanks for the support. I will be sure to post it when I actually get round to doing it. (dam you exams getting in the way)

By the way you should check out the rough guide I am going to follow: http://forum.overclo...ead.php?t=35185 what do you think of the technique?

Stock Noctua fans can be pulled off if you're doing an "earthy" tone, ie using tan and brown colors in the case. I think dying any fan is a good idea though as you should be able to achieve the color you want. It looks like they're hard to dye unfortunately...hope you can find a good method for this. Good luck.

if you can get away without breaking the blade assembly, go for it, but if you look on this forum, you'll

find I have broken many fans in search of the "dyed Noctua fan" plan. and since, ive gone the painted

route.

I never knew that something subjective such as looks could be right or wrong. Thank you for enlightening me.

That is a valid point however how many cases do you know of that have earthy tones.

painting the case would be an interesting way of going about this problem though. :)

Just annoys me when someone says WRONG about something as subjective as the colour of a fan. Besides just about everyone who has owned Noctua fans (including me) prefer a more neutral colour scheme...which is why I recently got 3 Scythe GTs

Everybody got their tastes.

I personally love their colours and would buy a case in their colour if they would just make one already ^_^

An army-green Corsair Vengeance case with tan/green sleeved cables would look good with the Noctua fans I think :)

i'd replaced the P14 after an unbalanced blade performance.

seemed to have gotten too much paint on it. but the temps and sounds

were great!

Well personally when I do get mine in the future, I will try and do some mods like this for sure :D

But still, WHY can't they make their fans simply, IN OTHER COLOURS?

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?

Ar, yes well that might work. To be honest I wasn't expecting you to find a case that came close to working with Noctuas.

I don't get why noctua doesn't make different colored fans. Everybody pretty much agrees that they have they best performing fans in the market, but most enthusiasts won't buy them because of the color and casual builders wouldn't spend that much on fans so they are missing a big chunk of potential costumers
