WD Red Pro and Expanded Capacities of WD Red HDDs Released

The first link is absolute bollocks for a ton of reasons.

The second one is far better. You shouldn't count the 7200.11 Seagate drive though. There was two huge bugs in the firmware which caused them to die like mayflies. That was many many years ago though and I am surprised that some stores even has them in stock.

How 2 be biased 101

I'm not trying to be biased. TBH, I am actually a Seagate fanboy. And a BIG WD hater.

I'd just like to say that all hard drive manufacturers are going to have drives that fail. Sometimes you just happen to have ordered drives from a bad batch or you just got one that didn't last long. It doesn't mean any particular company's drives "all suck" or that they're terrible. Let's do some math to demonstrate this.

Let's say a manufacturer ships just 1 million hard drives. If they had a 1% failure rate that would be 10,000 drives that failed.

In 4 years from 2008 to 2012 Seagate shipped a total 1 billion hard drives, a meager 1% failure rate would be a whopping 10 million failed hard drives.

People really need to hop off the fanboyism train. All major hard drive manufacturers make great drives and all manufacturers will have failures.

Other than that, I am looking at getting 4 or 8 of the 6 TB Red drives for a 24 or 48 TB NAS. My meager 2 TB drive in my desktop isn't cutting it anymore. :)

CPU: i7 4790K  RAM: 32 GB 2400 MHz  Motherboard: Asus Z-97 Pro  GPU: GTX 770  SSD: 256 GB Samsung 850 Pro  OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

^This.

No major HDD manufacturer would be able to keep themselves in business if

their HDDs had major issues over an extended period of time. Just imagine

if WD sold 1,000,000 disks to an OEM (say, Dell) and it turns out that

the failure rate is inacceptably high. They would lose their OEM contracts

faster than a politician can make a stupid decision, and since OEM contracts

are where the big money is (at least last I checked), they'd be out of

business (or at least seriously damaged) very quickly.

Besides, one really shouldn't rely on an HDD manufacturer's reputation

to keep one's data safe. Backups, backups, backups...

PS: How many times do we need to hear those porn jokes?

I have been befallen by bad health, so I'm pretty much out of

action at the moment, but I still check the forums once in a

while. Will be back at some point, but it's gonna be a while

yet.

OK. But are you still moderating the forum in the background? I mean, that's what you were supposed to do.

Not at the moment. I still read PMs, but for the time being

I must resort to refering people to the rest of the mod team.

I'll be back in full swing in a few weeks hopefully though.

Now, back on topic. :)

Make a 6TB Barracuda, then we shall talk.

Forget that, I love my Red's. 190/170 MBps in a RAID1 with no sound is perfect.
