Are mechanical gas pedals better than electronic ones? Our ML500 has a mechanical gas pedal, my dad likes pushing on the thing under the hood and the engine will rev up.

There's no such thing as electronic gas pedal.

According to my dad it sends a signal to the computer when you step on the gas, and the computer opens the gas line wider to allow more fuel? BS or not?

BS.

K.

The Acura is a V4 and I can hear the engine crying for mercy when my dad near floors it when merging onto the highway...in the city there's no approach to the highway to gain speed, you stop at the merge and floor it.

It probably sounds like my minivan. On the highway, it sounds like a dying cat. It struggles to get to 3000 RPM. And it's a V6. Weak.

It normally stays in first gear until 4500 RPM, then jumps to 3rd and hits 4k RPM before switching to 5th.

When we do road trips our ML500 stays in 5th gear at around 27-2800 RPM when doing 80mph.

No cruise control, no rear A/C, no 6 disc CD changer, no power doors, not even power windows. Surprised it even came with power steering and ABS and front A/C.

Our ML500 had the dinky stock CD player/GPS combo and we got tired of it so we got a nice Alpine in-dash GPS (will find the model number for you later) which had iPod support and DVD movie support but my dad hates the UI on it.

LOL, I've been wanting to replace every stereo in our cars with any stereo that integrates CarPlay so I can use my soon to be iPhone 6 in the car.

We didn't replace the speakers (Bose), we replaced the GPS module for one that had a touchscreen and iPod support, and it required a HUGE audio amplifier to be put in the trunk (think the size of an STB).

How can you drive a stick-shift? It's too complicated for me to comprehend.

Clutch in, select gear, clutch out, then foot on gas. Rinse and repeat as you go faster or slow down. There's guides everywhere like this one I think I posted a couple pages back.

I spend a lot of time in cars, each week I probably travel 200km because the nearest major town is 100km away. Most of my family live there anyway.

The longest car trip I've ever been on is this:
I7Ch7Ky.jpg

Yep. From my hometown all the way to Melbourne. Obviously it didn't take 30 hours, at the end of the day we stopped at motels. It was pretty exciting since I'd never left Queensland before.

I would have preferred to fly personally, but you see so much more stuff when you drive, stuff that you can't see if you fly. I wouldn't do it again, but it was nevertheless an unforgettable trip.

The longest road trip I've done is Brooklyn to southern Florida (Cape Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Miami) which is 1250 miles. And I did it 3 times. When you do that trip you stay on I-95 the whole way, there's a lot to see. We stopped in Savannah GA for a night then kept going. So much fun.

I can't grasp the concept of starting a stick shift car. I could drive one with a little difficulty, but I couldn't start one.

If you've got any feeling in your legs you'd probably get the hang of it pretty quickly^^

Since we're talking long road trips i'll add mine under here in a short bit

Opposite motions. While you're releasing the clutch, you're pushing in the gas pedal evenly. Hill starts focus on this technique, but you can use the handbrake to "hold" the car and newer vehicles have a hill-start assist that "holds" the vehicle for you, but some people find it a hassle since it stops the vehicle.

This guy has a Suburu with hill-start assist.

Now, if you mean literally starting the car, then it's clutch in, foot on the brake, and turn the key. Some people start in neutral, while others start in first gear which is safer since it sort of "locks" the vehicle and will stall if the clutch is off and no gas is applied. This means that the vehicle will not move at all when stalled aside from rolling back or forward depending on the hill and will have some resistance even if the emergency/hand brake is off. Generally, it's advised to park with the emergency/hand brake on even with an automatic. If manuals didn't require clutches to be in when starting, then the vehicle will lurch forward or back and probably kill or injure someone. Kind of like how automatics don't let you take the key out when parking in gear - I have a habit of doing that with autos since I'm used to manuals being able to parked in any gear which is not advised and while driving a manual and remind myself to never touch the gear stick since it's an auto - and you have to start with gear in park.

I'll be driving from New Hampshire to California next year. I'll have my license/learners permit by then and I'll be learning to drive with a manual transmission.

I had to drive from New Hampshire to Ohio and then to North Carolina and back to New Hampshire because we were moving my grandmother to near my uncle's house so she can be nearer to family.

As someone who just got back from driving 16 hours through the night in a full/cramped minivan, my answer is fly. Ask me in 6 months, and I'll say drive. It depends on what I'm doing and where I'm going. If it's just me and I'm going cross-country, I'd rather fly. If I have to pay for a bunch of people to go though, I'll drive. I generally just pick what's most economical. If I'm driving to Chicago or something (6 hours), I'll just drive.
