1st Time Build Need Feedback

Go to solution Solved by Nuclear Nerd,

Yes "nein" is German.

They're overpriced for what they do and extremely pointless. Boards for half the price can do the same thing.

What would you recommend?

What about the ASUS Z97-A

I need some feedback on this. It's my 1st build so I don't really know what i'm doing. I have however researched this for a few weeks. I plan to use it for mid to high end gaming. I'd like it to last for a while, and I don't plan on upgrading much. Plan to slightly OC the CPU. The maximum budget for me is $2500. Will not change to AMD CPU or GPU. Would like any bottlenecks identified.

Thank you in advance.

The thermal compound isn't necessary the cooler come with pre-applied compound.

Also you might wanna a 120gb or a 256gb SSD for your OS.

My Rig: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

CoolBeans' build gives you a 1440p extreme gaming performance for even cheaper. Why don't you want the AMD GPU? Honestly today there is not much great uses for CUDA with OpenCL becoming more and more widespread, unless you love Nvidia Shield there are not many reasons to go that route.

I just haven't had as good experience with AMD gpu's as i have NVIDIA. I am actually using a 5 yr old AMD GPU Laptop, and it has worked fine, just NVIDIA works better for me.

Z97-A is good but I'd get the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 if you want a red themed board.

Do you think this is a decent build? and thank you for all the help.

I'd go with this instead. Just changed to an i5 and dual 290s. Better performance and you save money.

I'm not very good with this stuff, but http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2095973/msi-radeon-290-4gb-msi-geforce-gtx-780-4gb.html go to 17seconds 1st comment. And how is the i5-4690k better than an i7-4790k.

I've got no clue what to look for in that link....

If you're gaming, a 4690k performs just as well as a 4790k for $100 less.

According to TechPowerUp, they are pretty much neck and neck. I would go for the GTX 780 because it will be quieter, even with the same cooler, due to its more efficient GPU with less transistor density. The 780 will always run at its rated speeds, while the 290 has a tendency to throttle below its stock clocks when pushed hard. That may not happen so much with a Twin Frozr cooler, but its still an indication of a major design flaw in the 290 series. The GK110 chip in the GTX 780 is an overall more refined chip than the Hawaii chip in the 290, which has sacrificed power efficiency and heat generation for performance. Lastly, with the 780 you'll get better driver support, and access to unique Nvidia technologies like PhysX, Adaptive VSync, FXAA, TXAA, HBAO+, Geforce Experience, Shadowplay, etc. Adaptive VSync alone makes the 780 worth it.

Ah. Okay, step by step then.

780 is not quieter because of a more efficient gpu and a lower transistor density. That person has no clue what they're talking about.

MSI 290 Twin Frozr cards run above rated speeds because the cooler is extremely efficient, it does not throttle when you're maxing out the card.

GK110 is not "more refined" because there's no point of reference. Hawaii and Kepler are different architectures. As with AMD they just shove more power in to their chips with MORE POWER! (Go Jeremy Clarkson!)

Drivers for AMD are pretty damn solid, PhysX is nothing special, Adaptive V-Sync is nothing special and doesn't work and was made specifically because Nvidia screwed up V-sync, FXAA is not an Nvidia exclusive, TXAA is not required for games, neither is HBAO+, Geforce Experience is "okay" at best and somewhat pointless if you know how to change game settings, Shadowplay exists with AMD under a different name.

For that last part the guy is an idiot and probably talking about the wrong thing. Adaptive V-sync has been around since at least the 500 series and exists on lower end cards. They're probably talking about G-sync which is expensive and not needed for gaming unless you've really got the $ for it. It's mainly meant for lower end cards.

Dual 290s is faster than dual 780s by a bit.

I want the i7 because i do some very large spreadsheets and heavy multitasking and [(correct me if i'm wrong)again] but i7 has more hyper threading which helps with those kinds of tasks but i don't do those as much as gaming.

Well going with 290s saves you enough that adding an i7 goes with your original budget.

What are your system specs?

Just curious about bias.

They're on my profile. Nothing special either.
