AMD 290 and 280x Performance Difference?

Go to solution Solved by Zelx,

For 1080p, you will prolly see a increase of average 10 fps maybe, depending on your setup.

Higher res than that, 280x will suffer a bit, so R9 290 is the way to go.

You can also go check benchmarks on those two gpu's if you want to be sure about this.

Noob Question:

How much performance difference are there between AMD 280x and 290?

I'm planning to upgrade my GPU cause I'm not satisfied with my 270x and I'm having a very tight budget at the moment.(This will come out of my already low part time job salary)

Will I regret getting the 280x if I can get the 290 a few months later if I wait? Or is it worth it considering that I will buy another GPU someday? I want to know how much performance loss

will I get if I stick with a 280x and do you guys know any reviewer that can show graphs on how many percent is the difference between the two? I appreciate those who will comment to

this post. :)

Get the 290, its price to performance is amazing, as long as your power supply can handle it
EDIT: the performance difference is 20-30% if i am not mistaken

Roughly 20%?

Can I asked where you got the numbers?

get a 290 just because you can

It costs me around $100 more(converted to php). I just want to know if I will lose significant performance if I go with the 280x and how many percent it is 'cause I'm really tight in my budget atm

20-30% increase in performance from 280X to 290 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1041?vs=1068

If your monitor is 1080p then the 280X will be great, if higher than that resolution then the 290 is pretty much necessary.

Yes the difference is pretty noticeable, around 20%-30% at stock. Not to mention 290 have better tech, VCE 2.0, full Freesync support, XDMA crossfire.

Why not crossfire your 270x with another? It might have a few issues but if you're on a really tight budget it might save you a fair bit of cash. Crossfire scaling and frame variance has improved markedly as of late. Two 270x's should give performance similar to a 290.

Though that's quite doable, imo, it's best NOT to CF/SLi two or more lower end cards. Higher end cards have the VRAM (R9 280/GTX780 and higher) and wider memory bandwidth to accommodate higher res and/or eye candy. For the OP, an R9 280 is the bare minimum, but since he wants to see a marked improvement over his R9 270X, the R9 290 is the ticket.

around 20% faster but this is against R9-280x Toxic which is one of the highest factory overclocked R9-280x@1150mhz.

I love mine, my old HD7950 @ 1225/1700 would surpass the 7970 and I upgraded to the 290 non-x from Gigabyte and its sitting stock now 1040/1250, 5*c warmer now too 38*c/77*c, but much more performance.

Whenever the 7950 setup would struggle (8xAA and such heavy stuff) @ 1440p (even some 1080p titles and those pesky frame dips) <- this is when its a feasible upgrade.

Those dips are non-existant now, I'm grabbing excess of 65fps-100+ fps depending on the game played, any dips fall above the 60fps smoothness and the 7950 may have dipped to under 60fps at some of these stages.

Worth it IMO even @ 1080p in regards to "future titles" /not to be mistaken for future proofing, future titles WILL be more demanding, even @ 1080p, this is where the currently un-used portion of power thats not used in some games, will be no doubt used to its full extent in the future.

The 290's are no slouch.

/Nvidia counterparts are good too, if you also swing that way, just explaining my experience as its so similar to your OP Q.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

What I'm planning is to sell my 270x and add some more cash to buy a 290. I think it's much better to go with a CF 290 like @GamerDude said.

Yeah and I think it's much better in the long run.

EDIT: My Sapphire Dual-X 270x is a 4GB Edition so I don't think VRAM will be an issue. :)

Currently, I'm using a 900p atm but I wanted to upgrade to two 1080p monitors(three if I can afford it)

Yeah I'm considering if I'll go with the toxic or just go with the 290 tri-x

Edit: I'm glad I didn't bought the Metro Last Light last Steam Sale. I think my PC would cry xD

Check out my channel if you want to see some 280x vs 290 comparisons and also which brand of each model is the best.

Dont use gpuboss its one of the worst sites I have ever looked at.

People who say a 280x will run any game maxed out at 1080p are absolutely dreaming, my 780ti couldnt max out assassins creed black flag or crysis 3.

In saying that, most games you could run on 'high' settings at 1080p without a worry such as tomb raider or bioshock infinite, but the 290 with its Hawaii gpu is a just a much newer and better.

(Edit: I realized their review is inconsistent or not even similar with other reviewers that I saw where those reviewers have similar results)

Sapphire models are my bet for AMD GPUs. They're very good at it. :D

Paying for the privilege.

290 if frame drops under 60fps annoy you, because their now gone with the 290.

280x if they don't bother you too much, because they generally climb back to to acceptable levels again shortly.

The 270x to 290 jump would be a great improvement.

Having a little overkill is good for 1080p, when the types of games we all play get better and better in GFX fidelity and your overkill card is still rocking excess of 60fps in newer titles :)

Would serve you well for quite some time.

Yeah. I'm also planning to do two way crossfire after a year of having it. I really want to go overkill with the graphics settings in most games because it also adds a greater experience with an already good experience of playing games :D (Playing BF3 with max settings is awesome!)
