Home Server Running FreeNAS

Go to solution Solved by Vitalius,

Wow thats really cool, can you suggest a set of 16, 23, and 32 gigs of ram? Ecc of course I don't know what my price range is yet it just kinda depends on a couple of different things.

16 (2 x 8GB):

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8532836 - Non-ECC, $140, It's 1866 because it's the cheapest anyway.

Here. - ECC, $176, buy 2 of them, it being NeweggBusiness doesn't really matter. It doesn't change anything AFAIK.

24 (3 x 8GB):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239268 - Non-ECC, $235, speed doesn't matter here.

Here. - ECC, $352, buy 3.

32 (4 x 8GB):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231557 - Non-ECC, $301, my goodness it's ugly.

Here. - ECC, $440, buy 4.

This is what I was thinking for a server (home use only) has to stream to an Xbox 360, a laptop and 2 desktops no game streaming. I was thinking of using the a10 since its a quad core. I would go I Intel but it needs to have integrated graphics. It will be running frrenas off the flash drive. Eventually it will have 8 drives in it. I am also going to experiment with home cloud and plex as well. Let me know suggestions.

Why does it need graphics?

Why does it need a liquied cooler ><

My server is a nice quality z87 board (for 6x sata 3) and a pentium G3220 which is on its stock cooler and it runs at like 30 degrees, it stores music for streaming via plex, all my itunes movies for streaming, and it also stores all my steam library which I access over ethernet

I have mine in a Fractal Define Mini

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii

Freenas is memory heavy. So the more storage space you have the more memory you will need. I can't remember the exact specs.

FreeNAS recommends for you to have atleast 1GB of ram per 1TB of storage so you have just enough :)

Also you REALLY don't need a liquid cooler for a home server, with all those fans you are going to have the stock one should be just fine.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

That's only if you have the deduplication setting on. Its 1.5 gigs per terabyte if that setting is on. I won't have it on. Also it doeant need water cooling or graphics but I personally really dont like air coolers and don't like the stock coolers. Besides the define r4 will have the liquid cooler on the side panel vent not the back.

Ok. So. ... In reverse order:

Freenas is memory heavy. So the more storage space you have the more memory you will need. I can't remember the exact specs.

He is fine. 16GB of RAM for 16TB of storage. Admittedly, he'd probably prefer 24 or 32 GB, but eh. Close enough that it should be fine.

Why does it need graphics?

This is my question right here. Why? You can't do much from the FreeNAS menu if you don't know the commands for it. Everything is done from the WebGUI unless you just want to use CLI.

The liquid cooler is somewhat unnecessary imo.

-snip-

That's a bit much.

The A10-6700 + that MoBo is $222. Add the liquid cooler, and it's $328-ish. For just $40 less, you can get this bad boy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157419 It's smaller, more energy efficient, has more SATA ports, and you won't need that liquid cooler at all. It doesn't have, nor need, a stock cooler.

I've built 3 FreeNAS systems with that Motherboard. It's great. :D

That's only if you have the deduplication setting on. Its 1.5 gigs per terabyte if that setting is on. I won't have it on. Also it doeant need water cooling or graphics but I personally really dont like air coolers and don't like the stock coolers. That's incorrect. It's 1GB per TB by default. It's 1.5-4GB per TB with deduplication.

Well sorry its my first time building one. According to a video i watched on YouTube it was 1.5 per terabyte for each terabyte also I have been looking at that but I can't find ram to go with it without costing me an arm and a leg. I will drop that gpu, motherboard, and cooler if you can find some ram for that motherboard. Also half of those data ports are 3.0 gbs

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

It's ok. It's understandable. Yes, under certain circumstances. It just depends on a lot.

Basically, the reason that RAM costs a lot is because it's ECC. This is different from non-ECC like the RAM you've chosen there. ECC RAM is fairly important for FreeNAS' higher functions.

This is the point where you choose between having ECC or not. If you choose not to, then you either can't use ZFS scrubs or you have to risk destroying all the data on the system (effectively). If you don't use ZFS scrubs, then it's possible for your data to be corrupted over time.

If you don't care for those things, then it's fine and just buy normal RAM. That motherboard can use normal non-ECC RAM. The RAM you've chosen would work fine, although I wouldn't get 1866 speed RAM as that's pointless.

How do you set it up without a display then?

Simple. You ping freenas with cmd prompt, then just type the IP in your web browser and configure it from there.

Specifically, these steps:

Open command prompt by going to Start > Run > type "cmd.exe" without "s and press enter.

Type "ping freenas"

Look at the IP it pings.

Type that IP into your web browser.

Then you start the configuration process.
