Hi guys,

My rig currently has an i7 4770 (non K) in it and I was wondering if I'm going to take a big performance hit compared to an i7 4770K that is overclocked to say, 4.5 ghz. I'm worried that my current 4770 will not be near as good in the future (3-5 years) as an overclocked 4770K, if I were to just upgrade my graphics card down the road. Can you guys please help me to know if I made a mistake getting the non K version and how this will affect my computer in the future?

Thanks!

It might perform a little bit better than the non K version when overclocked.

Keep in mind, overclocking means higher power usage, temperatures, etc.

Keep your 4770, it's a great CPU ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Nah,not a problem.

If you have a Z series motherboard, you can tinker the settings and get as far as 4.2ghz with your current CPU.

Keep the 4770 for now also if you do plan on buying a K series CPU make sure the motherboard is a Z series.

Yep, I have an Asus Z97-A

Really? Even with a non K CPU?

Yup.

Multiplier is locked but you can mess with the BLCK but beware; If you overclock with blck,it also affects the ram and the gpu(it overclocks them too i mean)

If you are gonna do that, make sure to follow some guides and do a good research..in general..

Yes, non-K CPUs can overclock using the base clock. Doing this also OCs RAM and iGPU so underclock your RAM first, disable iGPU if you don't use it, then increase your base clock little by little and see where you can get with it. I have a 1055t that's base clock overclocked to 3.5GHz (from 2.8) and it'll likely do more

Hmm, ok I guess I could try it.

If u so much to overclocking why did u buy i7-4770 ?

After 4 years you should have enough money for whatever cpu is out at that time.

Are you doing heavy video rendering/ image manipulation and feel it is very slow ? Why not buy 4790k then instead of 4770k ?

If u not professional who really need extra power then I see this topic as pointless speculation.
