R9 290X Temperatures

I've noticed under the recent drivers my GPU has been hitting 70+ Degrees C with a NZXT Kraken G10 and a H55.

 

Is this normal?

fan running at 100% or is it only trying to hold the temp around that?

Yeah, there's hot air coming from the fan

What were your temps before that? What was your testing/diagnosing methodology? It's probably normal, the H55 is midrange.

Would a better fan help?

My PSU gave in just after this (OCZ ZS-750W) and arched off the side of the case. Could 'bad power' from that 'maybe' faulty PSU maybe add to this?

Probably, but not much. What fan is on there right now? does it run fast? Did you overclock your card? 70°C isn't that terrible after all.

Yes it's overclocked to 1200/1680, I know the temps are acceptable for that card, just seemed a bit high.

70c is not bad, especially for a 290X.

 

This card gets "barely warm" at 80c, 95c is the default max temp

 

Is 90 Degrees ok for VRM1? and also, Would a Corsair RM850 power supply be able to properly handle my build (in signature)?

Oh yes, that PSU will definitely handle your rig without any issues. The only demanding thing you're running is that 290x, and you could run that on a 6-700 Watt PSU. With the 850W model, you'll have a nice amount of headroom for minor expansion or swapping out the 290x for a newer GPU in the future.

No absolutely not. Did you not put heatsinks on the VRMs?

Stop what you are doing, power off your PC, and go buy some heatsinks.

The problem with the G10 is that it does not offer any proper cooling to the VRMs, a single fan blowing over top of them is NOT enough.

Do not let those VRMs get that high or you will damage your card.

Agreed, that's the major problem with the Kraken G10. It only cools the GPU die itself, but the memory, and most importantly the vrm also require cooling. The vrm can get extremely hot on some GPU's, the 290x is no exception.

 

If you want to water cool your GPU, I'd highly suggest getting a waterblock and doing a custom loop. Otherwise, your GPU is much safer with either a regular 3rd party cooler (DirectCU II or Windforce 3 are my favs), or ensure that you're using heatsinks and preferably direct fan cooling on those vrm chips with the G10.

I've chopped up half the stock cooler to cool the VRM's, might try dropping down the voltages.
