I am preparing to possibly do a Crossfire setup in my system, so I went looking for a power supply that could handle my power needs, and I came across this unit from Raidmax.

This power supply is very appealing to me because it is 80 Plus Gold Certified, has enough power for a Crossfire or SLI setup, and is incredibly cheap.

What I don't know, however, is whether or not I can trust Raidmax power supplies. Would I be fine with this power supply, or should I spend about 50% more for a PSU from a different brand? If so, which one should I get?

Thanks for your help.

Stay far, far away from Raidmax psus. Raidmax is probably the #1 psu brand you will be told to stay away from.

What are you powering?

It would be powering an i7-4790k, a Radeon 7950, and a R9 280. (The 280 is a rebranded 7950, so they can be Crossfired)

Raidmax!? Blaspheme! Hang him!! No really, just hold on we'll advise you <_<

What about this EVGA PSU?

I looked up the Raidmax AE Series a little while ago. It barely cleared Bronze efficiency, let alone being properly certified as Gold.

What about this EVGA PSU?

Much better. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=377

But more than you need. The 750W would be fine. Even 650W, but the G2 Series doesn't go below 750W.

You can comfortably get anything "jonny guru recommended" like the other poster said 750 or 650 is fine for what you want to power

The most common result of insufficient wattage is a paperweight that looks like a PC

Overkill. A decent 750w is already more than enough: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-110b20750vr

I would like the extra 100w if it's not that much more. Also, I saw that Evga has a Bronze version of the 850w one; would that be OK, or should I definitely spend the extra ~$40 for Gold Certification? (I don't have to pay the power bill)

I suggest just saving your money and going with 750w. No point getting more than you need.

I haven't seen any reviews on the new 80+ Bronze EVGA psu. But they are built by Super Flower so one might expect reasonably good quality. You might also consider the Seasonic M12II 850W or the XFX Pro Series 850W (P1-850X-XXB9). Although both of those are more expensive than the EVGA.

EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR (80+ Gold) is currently available with a $20 MIR from NCIX.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Yea, but if I go with the Bronze version, the 850w is only $10 more, and if I ever need that much power (dual 290xs, maybe) I'll be glad I spent the extra money. It's always better to have more than you need, just in case.

Up to you. You have a better idea of your tendencies than I do.

@tuberolector @WoodenMarker Lol the B2 750W has only just been out, there's already a 5star customer review on the above Newegg link. 5stars, it worked. Glowing recommendation.

The difference in the power bill won't be very much at all. The quality of the unit and the price are more important.

That 850W B2 is $99, the 750W B2 is $89 at Newegg and $85 at NCIX.US. You could get the CM V650S for $89 or the V750S for $99. Excellent units, 80Plus Gold, semi-modular.

EDIT: For 850W units. http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/power-supply/#W=850&m=52,50,11,57,14,51,71,63,39&sort=a9&e=6,5,4,3,2

The B2 850W should be a fine choice, although no reviews are out yet.

The Antec HCG-850M is also good. Bronze, Semi-modular, though $20 more.

Would you recommend the V750S over the B2 750W or the G2 750W ($119.99 at Newegg right now).

Also, is 750W definitely enough for two R9 280s (with overclocks) and a i7-4790k (also overclocked)?

The EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 80+ Gold is available at NCIX for ~$110 and has an MIR that will bring that cost down to ~$90.

750W should be sufficient for the load you describe, especially using a quality psu.

I would go for the G2 750W. It has a semi-fanless mode and is fully-modular. The V750S is an excellent unit though.

With a 3770k at 4.6GHz and MSI OC R9 280, HardOCP recorded the test system pulling 360W.

With a 3960X at 4.7GHz and Sapphire Dual-X R9 280 OC, Tweaktown recorded the system using 417W.

750W is more than enough.
