photo shop, and avid media composser are there best and standers for what they do. an step down from avid is premer pro and now that adobe is sub only now you get it when you rent photo shop. it soled as a house it's an excellent NLE system that is replacing final cut pro for post production houses and news room's that are not working with just avid.

when asking on which you NLE shud use to edit video I will tell you to get avid and an mac. life is easy when it just works.

photoshop definitely is the no one among all the photo editing software, it's the professionallest for all photographers.

but I'm using photostudio to edit photos, more easier and handy price.  :)

photoshop portrait is the skill photographer should learn with professional picture editing software

Although Photoshop and Premiere Pro (or Sony Vegas) are my recommendations (AVID's more for Hollywood), if you get Linux, there are Premiere Elements quality video editors for free, and you can always get Gimp and Paint.net. Although they are no substitute for Photoshop, you can use several free programs to achieve what you need. You may not need all the features in Photoshop, especially if you're only beginning on YouTube. Don't underestimate these software. Much like how MS Word is overkill and you can rely on free word processors, image editing and video editing does not have to be expensive.

If you are willing to pay (or torrent, but you didn't hear that from me), I recommend Premiere Pro for editing. I use it, and I love it. I started on Sony Vegas, and it's also great, so I may try the newer versions. Vegas is lighter on your system, and very easy to learn. I know, because I used it before Movie Maker and iMovie.

I think that it's best to keep the two apart.

My recommendation is Lightroom for photo editing, it's what the majority of the pros out there use.

I'm only a photographer (sadly, I don't have the stuff needed to shoot video ATM) so I can't comment on video editing software.

Adobe Premiere Pro: Video Production and Editing

Adobe After Effects: Cinematic Visual Effects and Motion Graphics

Adobe Lightroom: Digital photo processing and editing

Adobe Photoshop: Image Editing and composting

Sooner or later you'll figure out Adobe is just kinda awesome. :p

I love when people ask stuff like this, it's so subjective and asking for a factual return when what they really want is an opinion or simply find someone to validate a choice they already made in their minds.

I say use the Adobe Creative Suite, I personally love it.

Or you could use a frisbee and a football bat.

Lightroom 5 is AWESOME. I switched from Photoshop Elements 11, it's good as well, but LR5 is better. I also use Photomatix Pro for HDR.

There is only one "serious" program for editing photographs and that`s Photoshop.....everything else falls short. While it`s not easiest prog to master it`s absolutely best for passionate amateur or working professional (note: it`s not for people that just want to try things out, it`s pricey !).

As far goes with video editing i`m not competent to say which one is best but some of my friends that do that for a living use either Premiere or Vegas.

You said "editing photographs", not graphic design... as you know, those are two totally different things.

When you say "youtube channel" i'm assuming you want to make graphics for your videos (overlays, logos, etc), In which case I would suggest Adobe illustrator. Photoshop can be used but is more for photo edits where everything is in pixels.

As for video, premiere or vegas. I've used vegas for 4 years and it has a bunch of useful plugins to make it competitive with Adobe premiere.  I've recently transitioned to premiere in order to improve my adobe workflow, and it does have some nice overlapping features with after effects. But vegas is great for dragging and dropping clips, effects, and sounds in for a quick and professional edit.

Well graphic design usually involves huge amount of photographs (at least my work does) :) i leave hand drawn stuff to "artists" !
