Small gaming/CAD powerhouse, with upgrade in near future.

ForzaPC

Hi guys,

I'm planning to build a new computer for gaming and some CAD/CAE work. My plan is to build a future proof system (well, more or less). Currently i'm running an almost 6 year old system with an E6750 and 8800GT's in SLI. It was pretty beastly back in those days, but it just cannot run current games as fluently as I would like them to.

For the new system my wishes are that it has to be small and (near) silent. I will be using my current monitor (Samsung 2232BW, 1680x1050) for the time being. But it will be upgraded along with the graphics card when the new 8 series from Nvidia are available (Gsync ftw :D ). And by then maybe a nice diy custom case.

As said above, the 760 will be more then adequate for the time being (on my current monitor). Had a 750Ti in mind, but you get WatchDogs included with the 760 which equalizes the price difference (in Holland at least). It will however be upgraded to a 880 when it's available and at the same time a nice monitor with Gsync.

So what do you think? Would you change anything?

With regards, ForzaPC.

Changed the MSI Z97i Gaming for the Asus Z97i Plus. The Asus will get the 4790k to 4,5Ghz or so and will it be much easier to do nice cable management. The 760 will be replaced by a 750Ti TF. Will be good enough for my monitor I think?

No such thing as future proof.

What kind of projects are you working on?

The psu is overkill. The system would easily run off of the rm450.

If you're shopping in Holland, don't use the US pcparpicker and link us to where you're actually shopping instead. It would also hep to know your budget.

Good enough for what? The 750 Ti is quite the downgrade.

Well with future proof, I mean more like "fast enough for a while". CAD will not be the main purpose, but I hate slow computers when having some fun with Inventor or NX (just basicmodeling for personal use and some simulations)

The 750Ti will be temporary, I want to put in the 880 when it is available. Or if it isn't a significant step forward I can put in a 780 Ti, which will hopefully be reduced in price by then. My current monitor is 1680x1050, should be easy enough for the 750Ti.

I don't really have a limited budget, I just want a solid base for the 880 (or whatever will be the high end model). Together with the graphics card I will upgrade my monitor.

If what you're shooting for is silence, you'd definitely want to stay away from Corsair fans.

Rough budget? Is value not an issue?

So in short:

Quiet (silent is the goal)

Solid base for new Nvidia high end graphics card.

As small as possible (m-itx or m-atx)

No real budget, just good value.

You might want to wait till October for 200mm Noctua fans.

To be clear, I don't have a "limited" budget. I want a high end computer that will be updated with an top-end 8-series when they arrive. And the list you made is a great optimization, but not really what i'm looking for tbh  ;) . I made some changes, primarily the case, psu and memory. And I would like to know what would be the best choice regarding the memory and psu.

I really like the Adata XPG V2 Gold memory, but there are 2 models available: 16Gb (2x8Gb) 2400Mhz CL11 (€148) and 16Gb (2x8Gb) 1600Mhz CL9 (€134). Which one would you choose and why?

Also I read some negative reviews about the RM-series from Corsair so I went with the Seasonic X-650 (KM3) V2. It's rather expensive, very good apparently, but expensive. Are there any other options that are very quiet, fully modular and very well build?

I'd go for the cheaper kit--not much of a difference between the two. Both are still worse than the ram I suggested.

The rm series is fine. It's just that they use mediocre caps for a product being advertised as high end.

Your new list is quite worse than what I suggested..
