I can only suggest GIMP. Any others aren't as good in my opinion.

I have tried gimp but the gui was not very good. i would give it another try if it has the ability to get rid of people and objects like Photoshop has.

Corel Photo Paint, not free. But it is a mix of photoshop and illustrator, which is nice. Check it out

There are MANY good alternatives out there. First of all, for fairly basic photo editing (for anyone who needs quick and dirty editing and doesn't want to pay for software or learn a whole new program for red eye reduction), I'd recommend google+ photos. Don't knock it before you try it! Photoshop Express tools is another free web based photo editor that only supports JPEG. I wouldn't recommend either of these for heavy use. Photoshop Express online tools is flash based, and flash has stopped working for me while using it in the past.

If you end up using GIMP, give articles like this a good thorough read. http://lifehacker.com/how-to-make-the-gimp-work-more-like-photoshop-1551318983

As for photoshop/lightroom alternatives? DarkTable. It's not 100% like Lightroom, but when people realise they will no longer own their new Adobe software, I think more and more will jump on the bandwagon and contribute to its development. It's not native in Windows yet, but it has distros for Debian, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, Funtoo, Gentoo, Fedora, Macintosh OS X with Macports, so if you do have Windows, they suggest a Linux LiveCD http://www.darktable.org

Alternatively, there is LightZone which runs on Windows, Linux and Mac. Free registration is required to download, I have not tried this program yet, but it does run natively on Windows if you're opposed to other operating systems. http://lightzoneproject.org

Before looking in to buying a CC membership, think about buying a used copy of CS6 from a friend if they upgrade to CC (if you don't already have it). You won't get updates in the long run, but at least the software will be yours permanently.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.
