Powered Speaker issues...

Go to solution Solved by mr moose,

does it shut off when you run them of another source? like a cd player?

Hello Everyone!

I currently have a powered JBL speaker that keeps turning off at a certain volume.

It works fine on a low to medium volume but when you go about 50% on the speakers gain and about 50% - 75% on my audio card it turns off.

No sign of clipping.

I'm in need of answers. I emailed JBL but I'm not sure when they will reply.

Also the speaker has 3 EQ settings.

CUT l FLAT l BOOST

On flat It seems to handle high volumes without turning off. But on Boost it shuts off at high volumes.

Fuse has also been replaced.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

There probably is some sort of clipping protection going on. Just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it isn't happening.

If there was wouldn't the clip light at least start blinking ?

It definitely sounds like there's some kind of protection circuitry kicking in. Has the speaker always had this problem?

Not always.

Have the clipping LED blink lately? Could be a more simple explanation, which is the protection circuit, kicks in, but the LED's dead, hence it doesn't blink anymore....

The speaker protection circuit can kick in even if the signal isn't clipping (just too loud or dodgy speaker depending on the circuit type).  I would wait for JBL to get back to you before going any further.  Is the unit still under warranty? Assuming you have two, does the other unit do the same from the same input signal.  What about if you drive the unit from another source altogether?

Sounds like the power supply is too weak for the boosted bass. Especially the bass takes a lot of energy.

When I do have it loud I don't see it blink.

But when you turn the speaker on the all the lights turn on and then turn off and the blue power light stays on.

I don't think there is a warranty on it.

I only have one at the moment.

I don't have a cd player so I can't test it that way.

The way I have it connected is i'm using my external M-audio sound card and it is plugged in the front headphone jack with a 1/4 to 1/4 left & 1/4 right adapter.

I Set the speaker to 12'O Clock and then control the volume from the sound card.

So I Couldn't get a JBL Tech on the phone but I called a speaker company called Behringer and there tech walked me through my issues.

He pretty much explained to me that my external M-audio card's headphone jack is pre-amped for headphones. So he said a Amped headphone jack and amped powered speaker don't go together.

He explained in detail that i'm pushing way to much signal which the speaker can't handle. That's why it shuts off. He said that's a good thing that it shuts off.

Then he went on saying I should set the speaker volume at 50% and set the Sound card volume around 75%.

Using RCA to 1/4.

I forgot to mention that the sound card has RCA outputs on the back.

So now everything seems good.

Now its pushing a good normal clean signal.

Thanks for all the help!

Good to hear,  as soon as you said headphone jack, my first thought was to much signal.

And a little off topic, but everyone hangs shit on behringer, but how is that for service, taking time to help you solve a problem that isn't even with a product they made or sold.  And in the process promoting a feature it has.

Nothing is wrong with Behringer. Amazing support team , amazing service. Great products.

People always give them crap but overall your not going to get anything better for the price point they have on there stuff.

Yeah the rep I talked to was taking step by step to help and explaining what I should do.

JBL Tech support never answered the phone ( called 4 times ) they emailed me saying I have to take it to the Service center. They wouldn't even help.

But Behringer was beyond amazing.

Great company!

The only real issue with behringer (which isn't actually an issue if we consider their mission statement) is that the pale next to the big name stuff when it comes to mission critical production or professional studio recording.

Outside of that they have given P.A to those who would never before have been able to afford it (e.g I have installed more beheringer gear than other brands for charities) and they give young, not so well off musicians a foot hold into the industry.

When I did an install at a family members restaurant, all Behringer stuff.

All those big brands JBL , EV , QSC , you get what you pay for. $$$ - High end product

But Behringer budget friendly but you get pretty high quality from them and save money.
