I am wanting to replace a few things in my build, the parts i got are Motherboard (Asus Z97 ROG Ranger), CPU (4690k) and wanting to do a fresh OS install (Windows 8.1 64bit)

I currently have Windows 7 installed on a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, and I can use Secure erase to get rid of that/back it up.

Other components in the build are 8GB G.Skill Sniper 1600Mhz, MSI R9 270, WD Blue HDD with Games and Programs on it, And a Antec 550 Power Supply.

Pretty much I just want to know the best way to go about doing this.

But I have it in a NZXT H440, Can I get away with using a external DVD Drive for the OS install, Will the motherboard recognize it in the Bios ?

I do have a normal Sata CD drive I could plug in and do it that way I guess.

But yeh any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Case: NZXT H440, Motherboard: Z97 ROG Ranger, CPU: i5 4690K @ 4.2Ghz, Ram: 8GB G.Skill Sniper @ 1600MHZ CL9, GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 G1, Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, WD Blue 1TB, PSU: Cooler Master V650, Cooling: Swiftech H320, Monitors: 3 x Benq VZ2350

The bios will recognize the external usb cd drive, I've done it this way couple of times myself.
But please install the OS from a usb, it is way quicker and more convinient.

Windows 7 USB download tool (from Microsoft) , download this, and get a windows 7 iso from the web. Any will do as long as you have the windows licence.
If you're unsure, just google it.
