EVGA swapped 780 Class's ram?

rodion.zissou

Last night browsing other forums I saw a few people state that after the first few 780 classifieds shipped they switched out the VRAM modules for cheaper ones severely affecting OC performance.

Specific hynix swapped for elpida ram.

I thought you guys might know something about this.

Someone suggested contacting EVGA, getting vin #s, and finding a vendor that has the specific vin.

Have any of you done this?

Update

I talked with an EVGA sales rep this morning. He stated that there is no way to insure that a specific card has specific ram.

stocks of Hynix VRAM was low ever since the major fire at the factory

I knew you would know about this dragoon. Do you know how to get a Samsung or hynix version?

I read about the fire. I hope everyone was OK.

not really sure for Geforce side of things

Sapphire and PowerColor are still using Hynix VRAMs (I may be wrong)

MSI may be using Hynix or Samsung VRAMs (again not confirmed)

we can't really tell because the reviews of the GPU were the initial batches when they were using Hynix VRAMs

who knows, the later batches of GPU may switch VRAM brands

now I remember

I also did ask about VRAM brand in the tread here

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/161940-gpu-vram-brands-do-they-matter/

but details are sketchy

unless we can make a list of the VRAM used for recent batches of GPU

it really luck if you can get the remaining GPUs with Hynix VRAM

Samsung will still be a good option

I would like to hope they didn't change the RAM, EVGA's Classified GPUs are meant to be the best of the best. Maybe not anymore.

I'm taking to someone on overclock.net's Classified owners forum. He says all the recent ones are hynix AFAH/SK. I'll call them tomorrow, try to get the scoop.

First off, no one has provided a single piece of evidence to support this claim. Yet haters are automatically assuming the worst and bad mouthing EVGA. Also, a factory fire, is a very valid reason for any company to switch brands. Dragoon mentioned that fire, yet it was completely ignored by the haters. Regardless of what happen, EVGA didn't deceive or lie to anyone since they don't openly promote what VRAM is being used. There can be a million and one reasons why a company would need to switch vendors, and EVGA's track record proves they are always willing to go above and beyond in order to try provide their customers' the best products possible.

Thanks for the link. That article says only one person suffered minor injury. That's good.

Secondly, I didn't interpret much hate in his post. I think if anything frustration with the whole bait and switch which is ubiquitous among electronics companies. Granted, there are good reasons, like a fire, to change certain manufacturer sources. But what he was implying is that classifieds are supposed to represent best in class, which would be sad if they contained elpida ram.

I don't hate EVGA. I would buy from them any day.
