So yeah, is overclocking a cpu hard?

I'm asking this since i'm building a gaming pc for myself and the current pricetag is about 1400€ and about 350€ of that is CPU and mobo, and i don't have a cpucooler in there, should i get one?
If overclocking is hard and not needed for ultra graphics on games like BF4, AC4 i could get a cheaper CPU and Mobo and get an ssd or something instead!

Overclocking has gotten SOOOOOOO MUCH EASIER since it was in the past. Heck you can click button on your motherboard or hit a option in your bios and it does all the work for you now-a-days.

it's easy you change the CPU multiplier and adjust CPU voltage and you stress test for stability and monitor temps..follow any guide if you have no idea what you are doing but it's fairly straight forward...

Some things:

It's pretty easy, if you know what you're doing. If not, it can be a pain in the ass.

If you plan to OC, I would get a better CPU cooler, As it gets faster, the more hotter it gets, and soon, that stock cooler ain't gonna cut it.

You need a motherboard that supports overclocking (I assume you already know this, since you are asking this.)

You need to provide more voltage to your CPU. But don't provide so much, or else, it will go unstable.

If you get a good quality motherboard with lots of features, overclocking can be as easy as pressing a button.

That's all I got so far.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

haswell CPUs follow this guide:

looking at the thread tags you listed z87, 4670K and MSI wich are all what is being used in the tutorial.

Okay i have to take the opposite in this discussion.

My brother's old PC was way easy to overclock. Dial in some vtages, calculate some base clocks and multiplyers... Done

Overclocking with my msi motherboard is a pain! I am overwhelmed by all the options, i never really got a good oc with an adaptive voltage. It just never works how i want ot wo work. So unless your motherboard is called ROG, it is a bit more difficult.

As far as GPUs go: bloody easy, do it right off the bat.

who cares...

Get a good quality motherboard, preferably one with 8 pin power connector + 24 pin power connector.

Increase multiplyer INCREMENTALLY (this is important, don't raise it too far too quickly) and then stress test (Prime95 for AMD and IntelBurnTest for Intel CPUs) until it fails. If it doesn't, keep increasing the multiplyer INCREMENTALLY until it does fail. Then, increase your voltage a step until it's stable.

That's the process. You'll know an OC is truly stable after about 24 hours of stress testing. Please for the love of God make sure you have a good aftermarket cooler before you do any of this though.

There are also some settings that you will need to disable/enable in the BIOS, but since I don't know the specifics of your machine, you're probably going to need to look up a guide for your specific CPU.
