Bad FPS in Games with a R9 280X?

hey guys for a while ive had my Sapphire DualX R9 280X and now im getting fed up with what i perceive to be bad performance

in Battlefield 4 i hit lows of 20 fps not exceeding 60 on ultra or high changing the settings doesnt appear to have any effect and performance is similar between mantle and direct X

this is the same story in pretty much all my modern titles saints row 4 and far cry 3 both hit about 40fps during gameplay

i dont know if this is normal but it feels wrong for such a beefy card

any help or suggestions would be great thanks

What resolution are you running the games at?  The performance sounds too low, perhaps you have a faulty card.

right sorry forgot to mention that, just standard 1920x1080p resolution so it shouldnt be pushing it to hard, so yeah ive been thinking it might be faulty since my old 7850 did just as well kinda hoping it wasnt that though

I think your expectations are a bit too high, the 280X is a good card, but it's not a monster.

Try to use beta drivers. And don't forget saints row IV isn't well optimized.

Also BF4 on ultra is a bit too much for the card, the card can barely keep the card above 60FPS in BF3 on ultra.

It's not a monster but it can surely keep 60-80fps on BF4 Ultra.

Update the drivers, 13.X are old drivers and are lacking a lot of optimization for the latest titels.

Get the latest driver form here: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

14.4 is stable. There are also beta drivers, they are a bit less stable but tbh i use always the beta ones for months now and i haven't seen anything unusual.

Also check with MSI Afterburner if the gpu core works with the right clockspeed during gaming.

wrong. The 280x is a beast of a card. My friend has a 7970 and gets about 80fps ultra on dx.

Edit: even my 760 was able to get 80fps in bf3 ultra. I knkw it is nvidia optimised but amd cards run it well too.

Edit 2: what mhz is yoir card running in game? I had this once, where my 760 only hit about 30fps in far cry 3. I found out it was only running at 500mhz. A few restarts and deleting every gpu ocing programm solved it.

Nobody is really touching this, as it's not relevant to the OP. But it is pretty important.

Why are you running mixed memory in your computer? You want all dims to be running at the same speed. Are the 1333MHz dims running at 1600MHz also? Because if they are not and you cannot get them to do 1600MHz. You would be better off removing the 1333MHz dims from your CPU because that will definitely cause issues.

adaptative multisample or super sampling at CCC? if you have some crazy settings at CCC you may get 30 fps playing league of legends

I have a IceQ X2 280X in my rig (see sig) and on Mantle BF4 at 1080p ultra settings and 4x AA I don't drop below 45fps. General gameplay is a smooth 60fps pretty much all the time (my monitor is only 60Hz). The only game that it's struggled with maxed out at 1080p so far is Watch Dogs (needs more then 3GB VRAM). Not sure what's going on with yours.

try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6DOBV7QkLU worked for me and i have same gpu

this helped out alot usually staying in the 40fps or higher dipping down occasionally in heavy scenes

yeah i am running mixed ram frequencies, did have the 1333mhz overclocked but that might have been lost so will try that sometime

card core clock is 1020mhz and runs that consistantly

thanks for all the help, will run a few more tests and what not and post results

Yep that is about the same as my 7970, 40 FPS max settings in FC4 and sitting around 55 in BF4 with dips to 40-45. But I think mine is thermal throttling so I am not sure what is going on with yours.

Are there any settings besides upscaling that you can turn up?

Its the slightly turned down AA that's making it easier to run.
