Its annoying as hell when you go into a game and its not lag that kills you but framerate drops so my question is if i set my xbox one to 720p instead of 1080p would there be any issues i watched several videos saying there are issues if you game at other than native resolution but what are they and i want to learn if they outweigh the annoying fps drops

No. Like 95% Most games only run at 720p or less anyway. Otherwise maybe.

just i saw linus' video he put up a little while ago and he said if you game at lower than native res there are artifacts and something else is this just a pc thing

Nah basically just blurry. Most console games for ps3 and 360 are not 1080p. Some are even less than 720p. They sometimes use some post processing to make the upscaling look better, but most console games try to squeeze more effects than a better looking native res.

It really annoys me when something runs at 30 fps and not even stably at 30 fps. Anything under 30 is not playable. If they ran at 60 and dipped it would be fine. Otherwise if it is 30 it better never dip.

OMG I just realized you said xbox one!

Yah if the games are 1080p or 900p then running at 720p might help framerate

Not sure if it actually works like that, think the game in still internally rendered at what ever the game was programmed to, then just sent out to the tv at 720p.

Having said that though, would actually be cool if it did offer up some performance boosts :)

Putting your Console on a lower res doesn't increase fps or anything, you should ONLY do this if your screen is a lower resolution than selected (which should'nt happen).

Indeed. This is true for the vast majority of titles on consoles.

Console games usually have a fixed internal resolution which they render at. When the console claims to be outputting a different resolution that's because it is taking the game's image then upscaling or downscaling it to match the desired resolution. Only a few games I know of will render at varying resolutions - Gran Turismo 5 and 6 for example can either render at 720p 60fps with 4xMSAA, or 1080p 60fps (upscaled from 1280x1080 / 1440x1080 respectively) with 2xQAA / 2xMLAA respectively. :)
